The eight Trials of Aql are an ordered story chain, not eight caves that can be cleared in any sequence. When a cave icon stays orange, an altar is inert, or the next recording will not advance, stop searching the room and verify the previous Trial in the Journey log. The route below follows the live-world order and separates location problems from the test inside.
Pack once for the whole chain
- A Sandbike for Trials 2–6, then an Ornithopter or a very patient ground route for the late regions.
- A charged Suspensor Belt for the Hollow Hammer climb and the Hagga Rift descent.
- A Cutteray for Trial 8’s blocked passage.
- A shield, healing, weapon, and spare power for the combat caves and the final test.
- Enough empty inventory space to avoid dropping tools or rewards at an instance boundary.
Trials 3 and 6 deliberately end at damaged sites with recordings instead of a spice dream. That is not a bug. The completion signal is the recording and the next Journey step, not an intact altar.
Trial 1: Mihna Cave and the watching eyes
Gate and location: track Echoes of the Past during A New Beginning. Follow its purple marker through Hagga Basin South to Mihna Cave. Go down the tunnel and inhale the spice.
The test teaches cover timing. At each floating eye, move only after it closes or turns its beam away. If an eye turns red, the section resets; sprinting farther does not save it.
- Use the nearest rocks as short checkpoints until the first path turns right.
- At the second eye, hug the right wall and pause at the middle pillar.
- At the third sequence, wait for the eye to close, then move between the right-side shadow and the cover under the stone beam.
- For the massive eye, advance on one closure, then climb the wall on the left on the next safe cycle.
- Go upstairs to the right and touch the wall.
If you repeatedly reset in apparent shade, check the eye’s actual beam rather than the brightness of the floor. The safe state is broken line of sight.
Trial 2: The Deep Struggle and the Static Compactor
Gate and location: finish Moving On in Vermillius Gap after Trial 1. The Deep Struggle is in Eastern Vermillius Gap, north of Aren’s Post between two major rock formations. Descend ledge by ledge; the fall is part of the approach risk, not the Trial.
Pick up the provided Static Compactor. Use it as a terrain tool:
- Remove the fire before stepping through.
- Clear the wall of sand.
- Trigger poison containers from a distance so their clouds dissipate away from you.
- At the apparent dead end, fire into the swirling sand to form solid floating boulders.
- Cross the boulders and touch the wall.
Completion unlocks the Static Compactor schematic. If Flour Sand collection is your real goal, confirm that schematic in Research before leaving; finishing the vision and owning a crafted tool are separate steps.
Trial 3: Cave of the Lost Pilgrim is a recording stop
Location: from the Wreck of the Pallas in Western Vermillius Gap, travel southwest to the separate formation and approach its entrance from the north. The Cave of the Lost Pilgrim contains Scavengers, so enter ready to fight.
After the enemies, take the first left through the moisture-sealed entrance and continue to the destroyed altar. Listen to the recording. There is no spice prompt and no puzzle to repair. The Trial is complete when the Journey advances to the Fourth Trial.
Trial 4: climb into the Hollow Hammer and earn Prescience
Location: the cave sits high inside the hammer-shaped central formation of Vermillius Gap. Ride into the formation as far as terrain allows, then climb by flat ledges so stamina can recover. A Suspensor Belt reduces risk but is not the only way up. At the broad ledge with the old doorway, follow the rear path, climb the usable flat faces, take the stairs, turn left, and enter the tunnel.
Inside the dream, take the Crysknife and defeat the arriving waves. The vision does not use your normal health bar, so the absence of that bar is not a UI failure. When the prompt appears, choose Awaken Prescience; use the enhanced state to clear the remaining waves, then go upstairs and touch the wall.
This Trial opens Prescience and the Unfixed Crysknife schematic. The important checkpoint is the new ability state appearing in the live UI, not a fixed damage number from an older build.
Trial 5: The Hidden Test makes sand the enemy
Location: in southern Hagga Rift, travel southeast of the Wreck of the Kytheria and cross the chasm bridge toward the east. From the eastern end, find the narrow opening in the ground between rocks. Drop carefully into The Hidden Test and inhale the spice at the tunnel’s end.
The bridge is damaged on the left, and the next rooms punish any contact with quicksand or open sand. Jump rock to ruin, climb to the higher remains, and do not try to outrun the worm across the floor. In the final area, take the Thumper, place it on the left near the exposed target, then immediately run right and up the stairs. Touch the final wall after the worm strike.
The reward is the Thumper schematic. If the worm never commits, the Thumper is probably on safe ground or too far from the target; place it on the open sand indicated by the scene and start moving before the emergence.
Trial 6: Devil’s Eye Cavern ends at another ruined altar
Location: travel to the northeastern edge of Jabal Eifrit Al-sharq. Near the Slavers’ Camp, enter the moisture-sealed Devil’s Eye Cavern. Its Trial icon should be purple when the chain is ready.
Clear enemies and poison hazards on the linear descent. The Static Compactor can disperse poison if sprinting through would overwhelm your resistance. At the destroyed shrine, play the recording. Trial 7 should begin automatically; no reward room or spice dream is required here.
Trial 7: descend to the Red Maw and race between tents
Location: go to the bottom level of the northern Hagga Rift, not a ledge visible from above. Bring a Suspensor Belt and charged power for the descent. Find the red-glowing tunnel, pass its moisture seal, and follow The Red Maw to the deepest altar.
In the vision, the collapsing route and sandstorm both enforce forward motion. Cross the first stone bridge and enter the tent. Repeat the sprint-to-shelter pattern; do not pause in the open to look for a marker. After the third tent, jump to the rocks on the right because the apparent flat surface ahead is not reachable. Continue a short distance to finish the test.
The Stilltent schematic is the practical reward. To leave the Rift without an exhausting climb, travel west along the bottom and use the open end of the chasm.
Trial 8: find Sietch Ta’lab, answer the route, then solve three rooms
Location: enter the desert below the southern Eastern Shield Wall near the Mysa Tarill and Jabal Eifrit Al-gharb borders. Look back north toward the large formation and find the narrow wall gap marked by a colored Fremen sign. Continue through Sietch Ta’lab, clear the minor enemies, and touch the purple seal. Bring a Cutteray before starting.
The door asks for the Fremen migration route. Select the planets in this order:
- Nilotic al-Ourouba
- Poritrin
- Salusa Secundus
- Bela Tegeuse
- Rossak
- Thurgrod
- Harmonthep
A wrong answer is recoverable; restart the questions instead of reloading the entire cave. After meeting Ari, cut through the obstructing boulder. At the crossroads, the right-hand route leads toward the next required room, while straight and left hold optional loot.
For the hologram lesson, identify the labels on the glowing wall symbols rather than copying their shapes from a different resolution. The required concept sequence is:
Bind → Dune → Grass; Planting → Shelter → Downwind; Animal → Aerate → Sand.
Change the symbols above the door until those concepts match the spoken lessons. In the disc room, rotate the floor mechanism until its segments form one complete picture, then use the nearby altar. After the cutscene, interact with the machine behind you on the left, defeat the final enemies, and leave through the narrow door.
The last objective is an epilogue, not another cave: return to your base. That return completes Finding the Fremen and delivers the late reward sequence, including Ari’s pistol. If the base return does nothing, confirm that the final machine interaction and exit door both registered before retracing the dungeon.
Diagnose the chain from the failure signal
| Failure | Meaning | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Cave marker is orange | The location is known but the Trial step is not active | Complete the prior Trial and track the new purple Journey |
| No spice at Trials 3 or 6 | Expected ruined shrine | Play the recording |
| Trial 5 worm does not hit the target | Thumper placement did not expose it | Place on open sand near the target, then run right |
| Trial 7 repeatedly resets | Storm exposure between shelters | Move tent-to-tent without stopping; use the right rocks after tent three |
| Trial 8 wall will not open | Concept sequence or migration answer is incomplete | Read the symbol labels and re-enter the ordered concepts |
| Finding the Fremen remains active | The epilogue return has not registered | Exit through the narrow door and return to a powered base |
These Trials feed directly into the region gates described in the story progression route: the Static Compactor, Thumper, Stilltent, Prescience, and final Fremen systems each remove a later Journey bottleneck.
