Dune: Awakening Trainer Locations: Unlock Every Skill Tree

The Dune Awakening skill interface showing a character build

Your mentor choice opens one class at character creation; it does not lock the other classes. Dune: Awakening lets one character learn Trooper, Planetologist, Mentat, Swordmaster, and Bene Gesserit skills, but each missing tree is tied to a trainer and a contract chain. The practical route is geographical: collect the early southern trainers before driving north, then pair advanced training with story trips to Arrakeen and Harko Village.

Check which skill tier the trainer unlocks

Each class has basic access, deeper skill levels, and advanced or capstone training. Speaking to the right NPC does not instantly grant every node. A trainer may:

  • offer the contract that opens the basic tree;
  • continue a multi-contract chain that exposes level 2 or 3 nodes;
  • tell you they have nothing to teach because the prerequisite stage is incomplete;
  • point vaguely toward the next trainer without creating a precise map marker.

After a lesson, open the Skills menu and confirm that the intended branch can accept points. Contract completion, class access, and buying a skill with a point are three separate checks.

Run the trainers in travel order

Class Basic trainer Advanced route Best time to start
Trooper Ghavouri, Griffin’s Reach Kara Valk, Arrakeen marketplace During Hagga Basin South
Planetologist Derek Chinara, cliff camp north of Imperial Testing Station 02 Derek’s testing-station chain across Hagga Basin Before or during the Sandbike Journey
Mentat Samin Morro, Riftwatch Zayn de Witte, an Arrakeen bar After reliable travel into Eastern Vermillius Gap/Hagga Rift
Swordmaster Arno, Pinnacle Station Seron Varlin, Harko Village With a Sandbike; an Ornithopter makes the contract much safer
Bene Gesserit Sister Mesa, Helius Gate Jocasta Cleo, Harko Village After Shield Wall travel and radiation readiness

Planetologist is the exception at character creation: it is learned in the world rather than selected as the starting mentor. For every other class, starting with that mentor skips the basic-access problem but not the later lessons.

Unlock Trooper before leaving the southern basin

Find Ghavouri inside Griffin’s Reach and accept Proving Grounds. The chain marks three targets in Hagga Basin South: Aatu Golven at Kaleff’s Stand, Kirsi Tol in Shamal Tunnel, and Cardanus Ulun in Edgeway Cavern. The objective advances from one target to the next; returning after only the first kill does not finish the lesson.

After all three targets, report to Ghavouri and verify that the Trooper tree is available. This is the cheapest early multiclass detour because it stays near the starting route. Even if you do not plan a Trooper build, opening the tree now avoids a long return trip later.

Advanced Trooper training moves to Arrakeen. Kara Valk is on the second floor of the marketplace. Treat her mission as a separate unlock: having basic Trooper nodes or choosing Trooper at creation does not make the advanced tree automatic.

Use Planetologist quests as a map of the Testing Stations

Derek Chinara’s first camp is on the cliff above and north of Imperial Testing Station 02 in Hagga Basin South. Enter the station, find the Minimic Film in the hidden room near the end, and watch for the bookshelf with the glowing yellow book that opens the route. Return the film to Derek to open the basic Planetologist tree.

The advanced chain is longer than every other class and is easy to mistake for a missing marker. Its location spine is:

  1. Imperial Testing Station 197 in Western Vermillius Gap: recover another film and return to Derek.
  2. Arrakeen: meet Cyprian Io after Derek’s camp step.
  3. Jabal Eifrit Al-janub, Imperial Testing Station 76: enter the facility, locate Derek, and recover the station objective.
  4. Arrakeen again: follow the lead involving Thufir Hawat before returning south.
  5. Imperial Testing Station 29 in northern Hagga Rift: recover the film, give it to Derek, and finish his local dialogue.
  6. Imperial Testing Station 71 in O’odham: collect both the requested films and research notes.
  7. Arrakeen: complete the report handoff.
  8. Mysa Tarill, Imperial Testing Station 163: recover Kynes’ purple Solido recording, then return to Derek’s original camp.

Do not drive directly to every northern station in starter gear. The questline is designed to track material and travel progression. If Station 71 or 163 is crushing the build, pause the class chain, upgrade the current region tier, and return; Planetologist access is not worth losing an unreplaceable vehicle.

Find Samin Morro inside Riftwatch for Mentat access

Riftwatch sits beyond the Eastern Vermillius Gap border near Hagga Rift. Samin Morro is in its main building and offers the basic Mentat contract. One launch-era version of the task asks for large stocks of Plant Fiber and Iron before a stealth poison objective, so open the live quest first and read its quantities before gathering. The stable checkpoint is completing Samin’s contract and seeing the Mentat branches in Skills.

The advanced Mentat trainer, Zayn de Witte, waits at a bar in Arrakeen near the main entrance route. His longer chain focuses on investigation, delivery, interrogation, and assassination. Finish each returned dialogue before leaving the hub; a completed field objective can remain pending until the trainer receives the report.

Do Arno’s Swordmaster circuit as one prepared expedition

Arno is at Pinnacle Station in the far northwest of Jabal Eifrit Al-gharb. His basic contract, Checking the Post, sends you across a wide section of Hagga Basin. An Ornithopter is not a formal requirement, but it turns the route from repeated cliff and chasm navigation into a controlled circuit.

The important stops include Devil’s Eye Cavern, a wreck where a green Identification Band opens the forward route, and Imperial Testing Station 76. At the station, search for the coded message and check the bookshelf marked by a yellow book for the secret room. Return to Arno after every listed objective; the skill tree opens at the handoff, not when the last item enters the inventory.

Advanced Swordmaster training is with Seron Varlin in Harko Village. If Seron has no lesson, check the Arno chain and your current Swordmaster stage before assuming the NPC is bugged.

Delay Helius Gate until the trip is survivable

Sister Mesa stands at Helius Gate on the southeastern edge of the Eastern Shield Wall. She starts The Missing Pieces, a multi-part Bene Gesserit chain. Reaching the NPC is not the hard part; crossing late-region terrain and completing the follow-up objectives in under-tier gear is. Take Shield Wall radiation preparation, water, a repaired vehicle, and a route back to safe ground.

Advanced Bene Gesserit training moves to Harko Village. Jocasta Cleo is on a raised section along the right-hand side of the hub street. Her contract series opens the deeper skill levels. If you chose Bene Gesserit at character creation, you still need these later lessons; starting access is not advanced access.

Spend skill points after the travel plan, not before it

Unlocking all five trees creates options, not five full builds. Spend points on the bottleneck you can observe:

  • Planetologist branches can improve tool efficiency, exploration, and vehicle work for resource expeditions.
  • Trooper mobility and explosives can solve distance or clustered-enemy problems.
  • Mentat tools support planning, poison, area control, and allies.
  • Swordmaster skills reward close combat but require the defense and stamina to stay engaged.
  • Bene Gesserit skills mix control, body management, and close-range options.

Do not copy a permanent “best” allocation from the launch build. Class balance changes, and Chapter 3 adds a separate Specialization system for late-game Crafting, Gathering, Exploration, Combat, and Sabotage. Class skills and Specializations are related build layers, not the same menu.

Repair a trainer chain that appears missing

Symptom Check Action
Trainer says there is nothing to teach Starting class, prior lesson, and current skill stage Find the basic or advanced trainer appropriate to the missing stage
No quest marker after a handoff Contract list and the last trainer dialogue Track the new contract manually; revisit the trainer if the dialogue was interrupted
Derek is not at the original camp Current Planetologist step Look at the next listed Testing Station or Arrakeen handoff
Contract cannot spawn on a self-hosted server Server/client version Update past the 1.4.10 fix for trainer, faction, and Lost Harvest contract spawning
Tree is visible but node remains locked Skill point, prerequisite node, and lesson level Finish the prerequisite and spend a point after the trainer unlock

Pair the southern and northern trips with the story region route. This trainer guide ends at access and quest recovery; it does not prescribe a universal combat build.
