Retro Rewind currently has 18 Steam achievements, and none requires a separate challenge mode or a missable story choice. The time sink is inefficient sequencing: selling a thousand tapes before keeping a thousand in inventory, ignoring returns until the 1,000 check-in counter is the only task left, or buying a costly machine after spending the same cash on an unnecessary expansion.
This route is for Steam App 3552140 as checked on August 16, 2026. Steam still lists 18 achievements after the Repair Desk and VHS-player updates. The developers have announced a larger video-game rental update for fall, so recheck the live roster when that update arrives.
Start with one tracking save and four rules
- Use one main store. Inventory, revenue, returns, level gates, expansions, and employee slots can progress together.
- Read the calendar task after an unlock. Community references report claimable cash and XP rewards, but their total XP figures conflict. Trust the current reward panel rather than a fixed old total.
- Let employees advance counters. Current readable guides agree that staff checkout, return, and concession work counts for the related tasks.
- Check Steam progress before a long grind. After a bundle, return batch, or machine sale, confirm that the intended counter moved.
Make a named save before selling a large inventory, replacing staff, or purchasing the final expansions. This is not because achievements are missable; it gives you a clean recovery point when a purchase does not advance the counter you expected.
Take the early unlocks while they still help the store
| Achievement | Live requirement | Efficient action |
|---|---|---|
| First Day Complete | Finish the first business day | Complete the tutorial shift, review the end-of-day result, and advance the calendar |
| RIP | Put one movie in the trash | Discard a low-value tape after inspecting it; the Repair Desk means a broken collectible no longer has to be the sacrifice |
| Good Customer Service | Help 20 movie-request customers | Answer recommendation and pickup visitors at the help counter throughout normal play |
| First Hire | Hire one employee | At the first staff milestone, choose a worker whose daily cost and task speed fit an existing bottleneck |
| Off The Books | Order one movie by SKU on the Black Market | Inspect an owned tape, enter its verified code, and complete one affordable order |
Do not throw away a holographic tape for RIP. Pick an ordinary duplicate or a cheap title that does not serve a reservation. For Good Customer Service, listen for the help-counter signal and read the exact request: genre, age, and critic tags can all matter. Accepting requests but leaving the customer waiting only postpones the counter.
The first employee slot is documented at player level 6. The June update added later player levels but did not remove this task. Hire when the worker can free you to complete requests, returns, restocking, or flyers; an idle employee advances nothing.
Install concessions in progression order
Three achievements require 20 successful sales from their station:
- Brain Freeze! – sell 20 slushy drinks;
- Popping Off! – sell 20 popcorns;
- Sugar Rush! – sell 20 cotton candies.
Readable launch and post-launch guides place the station milestones at levels 2, 8, and 12. Use the current unlock board if a later patch changes a level. Repair or activate each machine, keep its inputs stocked, and leave a safe working area around it. A sale counts only when the requested item is correctly completed and handed off; filling cups or bags without a customer does not finish the task.
Staff sales can contribute. During a busy shift, assign the employee or player so the concession request does not freeze checkout. For a rainbow slushy, the community route specifies using all available flavors; for other requests, match the displayed flavor rather than guessing from cup color.
Let revenue and returns run in the background
Business Is Booming! requires $10,000 in total revenue, not a $10,000 bank balance. Keep serving customers; ordinary spending does not erase revenue already generated. Do not stop buying essential stock just to make the cash display look like the achievement number.
Return Routine requires 1,000 movies checked in at the Return Station. Scan returns daily from the first week and let an assigned employee help when the pile is large. A tape that arrives at the chute but remains unscanned has not completed the check-in action. Rewinding, reserving, repairing, or shelving happens after that counter step.
These two unlocks pair naturally. More completed rentals create more revenue and later returns. If revenue advances while Return Routine stalls, verify that the employee is actually scanning at the return station instead of only moving tapes around the store.
Keep the collection milestones ahead of clearance sales
The three ownership achievements are:
- The Movie Enthusiast – own 250 movies;
- The Movie Collector – own 500 movies;
- The Movie Empire – own 1,000 movies.
The requirement says movies in inventory, not unique titles. Use the live task progress to confirm that a purchased bundle adds all of its copies before committing to a mass order. Tapes do not all need active shelf slots; readable community testing reports that boxed or backstore inventory still contributes.
Buy broad bundles when they are cheaper per tape, take useful New Release bulk offers, accept donated stock, and use the Tape Dealer for inexpensive gaps. Avoid using individual Black Market codes as a volume strategy. The targeted price is designed for specificity, not the 1,000-copy grind.
Delay major clearance waves until the relevant ownership threshold has unlocked and the task has been claimed. A sold tape may improve cash and shelf space while moving the store away from the next ownership milestone.
Save four foils for Holographic Showcase
Holographic Showcase asks for four holographic movies in one display case. Inspect tapes so a bright cover effect is not mistaken for the edition flag. Keep the first four verified foils out of the clearance bin, buy the appropriate display case from Decorations, and place all four in it at the same time.
New Release and bundle purchases can roll holographic copies. A SKU is not a guaranteed cheap foil selector, especially for named New Releases whose regular and foil versions share a title code. The SKU guide and 27-code New Release list explains that distinction.
Finish the level-gated purchases after the store can pay for them
| Achievement | Requirement | Route check |
|---|---|---|
| Certified Movie Buff | Unlock every movie genre | Keep leveling until the final genre on the current unlock board is active; launch guides place it at level 19 |
| Game On! | Buy an arcade machine | Reach the arcade unlock, then purchase one machine; launch guides place this at level 18 |
| Fully Staffed | Hire two employees | Keep the first worker or open a slot, reach the second-staff milestone documented at level 20, and hire both concurrently |
| Big Store Energy | Unlock all store expansions | Use the backstore expansion board and buy every remaining section, then confirm none remains locked or unpurchased |
The four new player levels added with VHS player rentals sit after the launch-era level 20 progression. They add systems and decorations, but Steam did not add a matching achievement in the current 18-item roster. You do not need to invent a nineteenth task for VHS players.
Use this cleanup order at the end
- Verify all three concession counters; leave the needed machine running during normal shifts.
- Keep an employee at Returns until Return Routine reaches 1,000.
- Stop clearance sales and direct spare cash into cost-efficient bundles for the next ownership threshold.
- Claim or verify Certified Movie Buff, Game On!, Fully Staffed, and Big Store Energy after their purchases.
- Place four saved foils in the same display case.
- Check Good Customer Service and answer every help-counter visitor until it completes.
- Compare the Steam list with the calendar one final time before assuming a counter is bugged.
The Movie Empire is likely to be the last unlock because 1,000 owned tapes demands continued purchasing after the store already functions well. Pair that grind with Return Routine and revenue rather than skipping days with the shop closed.
When an achievement does not unlock
| Symptom | Verification | Controlled retry |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar task complete, Steam locked | Confirm the game is online and the matching Steam description is identical | Save, advance the day, and reload before repeating only the final action |
| Concession counter stalls | Check that the requested item was handed to a customer, not merely prepared | Serve one correct order manually and watch live progress |
| Inventory total looks high but milestone is locked | Check the Data/task count after selling or boxing stock | Buy one small bundle and verify the exact increase |
| Holographic Showcase fails | Inspect all four editions and confirm one display case contains them simultaneously | Remove and replace the verified foils after a save |
| Fully Staffed fails | Confirm two employees are hired at the same time | Use the staff book after the second slot is live |
| Off The Books fails | Confirm the Black Market purchase completed | Use an inspected owned-tape code and buy the displayed result |
The June and earlier patches fixed several unlock, station, save, and pathing problems. If the UI still behaves incorrectly on CL 2308, preserve the save and verify game files before using mods or trainers. The developers explicitly warn that updates can make mods crash; unsupported tools are not an achievement repair method.
Keep the store healthy while chasing counters
Achievement progress should reinforce operations: requests increase service progress, returns recycle rentable stock, concessions add revenue, staff free the player for higher-value tasks, and inventory purchases expand the library. If a counter route creates blocked aisles, empty cash, and an unprocessed return pile, use the cashflow and busy-shift strategy before continuing the grind.
Official achievement and game records
The route uses the official names and requirements, then reconciles action details against current community guides and verified walkthrough references. An April guide’s statement that level 20 was the maximum was narrowed because the June update added four later player levels. Conflicting fixed task-reward totals were not repeated as fact.
