The useful BALL x PIT character is the one whose rule fixes the task in front of you. A wide-arc shooter, a turn-based shooter, and a character with no passive slots cannot be ranked on one permanent ladder without hiding the decision that matters. This guide maps all 22 ordinary progression characters in the Naturalist build to their firing geometry, slot rule, and unlock house.
Roster boundary: the Naturalist Update released August 6, 2026 and added Ballbearer and Hoary Hoarder after two-character Regal and Shadow updates. The standard progression roster therefore reaches 22. A separate PC Twitch-integration character can appear where that feature is available; it is not part of the ordinary house-unlock route below.
Unlocks have two steps
Finding a housing blueprint does not immediately add its resident to character select. Complete both steps:
- Find the house blueprint during a run in its associated area. Blueprint order within an area’s remaining pool can vary, so use the counter on level select rather than expecting a guaranteed first drop.
- Place the house in New Ballbylon and finish its construction by bouncing workers into the scaffold. The character appears after the building is completed.
If a character remains locked, check the scaffold and the level counter before repeating a rumored special condition. Old community guides speculated about hidden blueprint requirements, but the reliable action is to clear the named area’s remaining drops and complete the house.
All standard characters and the rule each one changes
| Character | Starting ball | House and blueprint area | Decision-changing trait |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Bleed | Available from the start | No special rule; the clean baseline for learning angles and recipes |
| Itchy Finger | Burn | Sheriff’s Office — BONExYARD | Fires ready balls rapidly with scattered aim and no normal firing slowdown |
| Repentant | Freeze | Haunted House — BONExYARD | Damage grows with bounces; the back wall sends balls home through enemies |
| Cohabitants | Brood Mother | Cozy Home — BONExYARD | Mirrors each shot in the opposite direction, with lower damage per copy |
| Embedded | Poison | Veteran’s Hut — BONExYARD | Balls pierce enemies until reaching a wall |
| Cogitator | Laser Vertical | Villa — SNOWYxSHORES | Automatically chooses upgrades, fusions, fissions, and evolutions |
| Empty Nester | Ghost | Single-Family Home — SNOWYxSHORES | No baby balls; fires multiple copies of an equipped special ball |
| Shade | Dark | Mausoleum — LIMINALxDESERT | Shots begin behind the enemy formation and carry bonus critical potential |
| Spendthrift | Vampire | Mansion — FUNGALxFOREST | Launches every ready ball together in a wide arc |
| Shieldbearer | Iron | Iron Fortress — FUNGALxFOREST | A frontal shield rebounds friendly balls and strengthens repeated shield contacts |
| Physicist | Light | Laboratory — FUNGALxFOREST | Changes ball gravity toward the back of the field |
| Flagellant | Egg Sac | Monastery — GORYxGRASSLANDS | Balls bounce from the bottom instead of ending their travel normally |
| Juggler | Lightning | Theatre — GORYxGRASSLANDS | Lobs balls toward a selected field position before their normal bounces begin |
| Makeshift Sisyphus | Earthquake | Rocky Hill — GORYxGRASSLANDS | Gives up direct-hit and baby-ball damage for greatly amplified area and status damage |
| Tactician | Iron | Captain’s Quarters — SMOLDERINGxDEPTHS | Turns combat into discrete turns, allowing a position and shot before enemies advance |
| Radical | Wind | Campground — HEAVENLYxGATES | Automates movement, aiming, and run choices |
| Falconer | Lightning | Falconry Hut — HEAVENLYxGATES | Side falcons launch balls from the left and right edges |
| Carouser | Charm | Party House — VASTxVOID | Returning balls orbit the character briefly, rewarding controlled proximity |
| Tiptoer | Laser Horizontal | Hidden Temple — SMOLDERINGxDEPTHS | Normal enemies do not detect the character at close range; bosses and minibosses still do |
| Tunneller | Earthquake | Stone Domain — SMOLDERINGxDEPTHS | Balls exiting the top or bottom wrap to the opposite edge |
| Ballbearer | Stone | Ball House — VASTxVOID | Doubles ball slots and removes passive slots |
| Hoary Hoarder | No starting ball shown in current community records | Unstable Tower — HEAVENLYxGATES | Has two ball slots and turns the remaining equipment capacity into passive slots |
The last four house-and-starting-ball rows were cross-checked against post-update references and official trait announcements, but their blueprint areas are not stated in the official announcement. Verify the area label and starting item in the current client if a future patch changes them.
Choose by the aiming model you want to operate
Direct and readable
Warrior is the control case: aim, watch the rebound, and learn when Bleed needs crowd support. Embedded converts a clear lane into reliable back-row contact, but the return path still matters after a wall. Repentant rewards longer bounce paths and punishes thoughtless back-wall contact. Itchy Finger trades precision for rapid output, so it is comfortable when the build’s value comes from broad contact rather than a tiny weak point.
Use this group while learning a new area. The failure is legible: a bad angle, an uncovered damage job, or an unsuitable recipe is easier to diagnose when the character is not also moving the launch point.
Geometry-changing
Cohabitants cover both halves of the screen but split individual-shot power. Shade begins from behind the formation, bypassing normal front-line assumptions. Juggler targets a landing point rather than an ordinary wall lane. Physicist bends returns with gravity. Falconer uses two side origins, and Carouser adds a close orbit after balls return.
The Shadow characters push geometry further. Tunneller turns vertical exits into loops; aim a column that enemies will enter on later passes instead of only the space they occupy now. Tiptoer can work near normal enemies without attracting them, but the safety rule ends for minibosses and bosses. Switch from close positioning to normal evasion before that transition rather than discovering the exception after taking a hit.
Run-rule changing
Shieldbearer asks you to catch friendly returns on the shield. Flagellant keeps balls active at the bottom, which increases contact but can delay their return. Spendthrift front-loads the whole inventory and may leave a long empty window. Tactician removes real-time pressure but makes every move advance the board. Makeshift Sisyphus requires area and status sources because direct hits no longer carry the build.
Empty Nester rejects baby-ball plans. Cogitator automates build decisions but leaves aiming to the player, while Radical automates the run itself; neither is the right tool for practicing deliberate recipe control. The Naturalist pair changes inventory architecture: Ballbearer must obtain control and sustain from balls because passives are unavailable, while Hoary Hoarder must commit two ball slots to a self-contained attack before filling the expanded passive side.
Match the character to the blocked task
| Current problem | Traits worth testing | What can go wrong |
|---|---|---|
| A protected back row survives every volley | Embedded piercing, Shade’s rear origin, Falconer’s side origins, Tunneller’s wrap | The chosen geometry may still miss a mobile boss; test the actual lane |
| Dense waves overwhelm direct damage | Cohabitants coverage, Juggler placement, Makeshift Sisyphus area/status amplification | Wave clear can hide weak single-target damage |
| You need time to read attacks | Tactician | A poor move still advances the turn; pause to plan before committing |
| A long evolution chain needs more ball space | Ballbearer, or Matchmaker partners whose starting balls supply ingredients | Ballbearer has no passive safety net |
| A passive evolution or Scholar cleanup is blocked by slots | Hoary Hoarder | Two balls must handle both waves and bosses |
| You want an execution test, not build management | Cogitator | Automatic choices may skip the specific recipe or Encyclopedia entry you need |
| You want unattended progression | Radical | Automation is not evidence that a planned strategy works, and it cannot guarantee a target unlock |
| A normal wave is dangerous at close range | Tiptoer | The stealth exception does not protect against minibosses or bosses |
Matchmaker changes the question
After constructing Matchmaker, a second character can bring another starting ball and trait. The best pair is not automatically two individually strong characters. Use the partner to supply what the lead lacks:
- Bring a compatible starting ball to create a planned early evolution with fewer random reward screens.
- Pair narrow firing geometry with a second origin or wider coverage.
- Cover a character’s rule cost: concentrated damage for a wave clearer, control for a rapid shooter, or sustain for a slot-restricted build.
Check how both traits interact in the current client before committing an achievement run. Automation, mirrored shots, no-baby-ball rules, and unusual returns can combine in ways that invalidate a plan built around only one character.
Do not use a tier list for these three choices
A static ranking cannot serve boss practice, Encyclopedia cleanup, and an original character’s eight-area clear equally well. For a first encounter, readable control may beat theoretical output. For Scholar, inventory capacity and manual choice matter more. For character-specific achievements, the game names the original character you must use, so a top-ranked update character cannot substitute.
Use the achievement roadmap to stack the original-character clears with the eight area-conquest counters. Use the evolution guide when Ballbearer or Hoary Hoarder changes how much of a recipe chain can fit.
The optional Twitch character
False Messiah is a separate PC Twitch-integration feature in current community records. Viewers can vote on certain upgrade choices and random events while a stream is connected. Treat it as an optional platform feature, not the twenty-third step of the standard housing route, and do not count on it for a platform-wide unlock or achievement plan.
Roster evidence boundary
The standard roster boundary and current Naturalist traits were verified through the developer announcement on the official Steam page and the official Naturalist Update article. Shadow traits and Guildhall context were checked against the readable developer announcement in Steam’s official news feed. House names, starting balls, and blueprint areas were reconciled across readable character and building references; update-era fields not stated by the developer are marked for current-client verification.
