Graveyard Keeper Main Quest Route: Untangle Six NPC Chains and Open the Portal

The church grounds in Graveyard Keeper

Graveyard Keeper does not have six independent quest bars. Snake, the Astrologer, Ms Charm, the Merchant, the Bishop, and the Inquisitor form three pairs, and an item produced by one chain repeatedly releases the other. If a progress bar stops, grinding more friendship for that same NPC is usually the wrong response. Find the paired character, the shared town upgrade, or the church requirement that has not moved yet.

This route starts after the church and Study table are open. It follows the dependency order needed to obtain the six portal artifacts without pretending that every material must be crafted on one fixed day. Keep a chest for quest items, visit characters on their symbol-days with the next item already prepared, and postpone the final hand-ins until any missable achievements or DLC conversations are safe.

Build a quest ledger before raising the bars

Track each chain by its current requested object, not by its percentage. The percentages unlock the next request, but the object tells you which other chain must move. Your final artifact ledger is:

Quest pair Final artifacts Main cross-gates
Snake and Astrologer Endless Notebook; Golden Angle Active key, restoration tools, Necronomicon, dark heart, necklace investigation
Bishop and Merchant Mirror of Pride; Salty Fork Trade license, crate business, cathedral, aristocrat papers, accepted invitation
Ms Charm and Inquisitor Necklace; Eternal Burning Coal Snake’s fake coins, perfume and Vagner work, dark organs, Astrologer rescue step

The table is a dependency map, not a recommended order to finish pairs. Progress all six until a request points elsewhere. That avoids spending several in-game weeks waiting for a character whose real gate is sitting in another NPC’s dialogue.

Open Snake’s chain, then let the Astrologer answer it

Snake first needs five Faith. The Astrologer provides the Keeper’s key and Snake supplies its Instructions; study them with 2 Faith and 2 Science to make the Active key. Returning that key opens the sacrifice area, dungeon access, and the route toward Gunter. A plain Keeper’s key will not satisfy the gate.

Snake’s dungeon requests escalate from items found on specific floors to town-chain objects. Bloody nails come from the dungeon from level 4 onward. A bucket of blood is in the level 5 chest, or can be crafted from ten blood. Later he asks for restoration tools, and this is the first major stop sign: the Astrologer’s chain awards them at its 40-point step, so continue the Astrologer rather than searching dungeon containers forever.

The Astrologer starts with Gerry’s skull and moves through the old journal and Keeper’s key. His Acid and restoration-tool sequence eventually points toward his daughter. That investigation crosses the Gypsy Baron and Ms Charm, then reaches the mill calculations around the middle of the chain. When the Astrologer asks for writing, turn in a silver-grade Book first and satisfy his following request with a gold-grade Book. If your version offers the Stranger Sins Research Obsidian substitute, using it skips that second book hand-in and can lock the Best seller achievement.

Back on Snake’s side, the Necronomicon comes from the Lighthouse Keeper after Snake asks for it; bring five maggots for that exchange. The sacrifice zone must be raised to 20, and the later combat requests include the Damask sword and the vampire hunter encounter. Snake’s medallion opens dungeon levels 11–15. The golden apple can be taken from the level 15 chest or obtained through Clotho, depending on which cost is more convenient.

Do not close Snake before side content is safe

The final Snake stage needs a dark heart. Dark-organ extraction is not available merely because the organ is inside a corpse; the Inquisitor must advance far enough to reveal dark organs, and the relevant technology must be unlocked. Snake ultimately gives the Endless Notebook and his final interaction joins the Inquisitor’s coal step. Community route testing reports that completing this chain can remove Snake’s normal availability, so finish any Snake-dependent DLC or side requests before the last hand-in.

The Astrologer’s last economic gate is the aristocrat papers. After the expedition sequence, he provides the Golden Angle and the necklace lead used to finish Ms Charm. Keep both final artifacts in a dedicated chest rather than carrying them through ordinary crafting sessions.

Make the Merchant finance the Bishop’s cathedral

The Bishop begins with the cemetery and church; the Merchant begins with the garden and produce. Their late chains meet at the cathedral invitation, but the Merchant’s business is the better engine for the expensive build requirements.

For the Merchant’s opening produce request, supply the requested carrots, cabbages, and beets or use the payment option shown by your client. His hiccup remedy leads to Clotho and the spice mixture. The important transition is citizenship: buy the rightful-citizen status and trade license, establish the crate business, then send crates from the warehouse. Build the production line before promising a tier you cannot sustain. Crate fame and the later dinner request are separate checks; high-quality dinners do not replace the shipment requirement.

The Bishop’s first gate is cemetery rating 5 and the church opening. His bowl request and subsequent building steps lead to a big church, then to the cathedral. The large upgrade requires both church and cemetery quality, while the cathedral stage raises those targets to 50 church quality and 200 cemetery quality and calls for three gold-quality carved marble pieces plus aristocrat papers. Read the displayed upgrade panel before committing materials, because a church upgraded ahead of the appropriate social papers can temporarily leave you unable to perform the higher service.

Do not chase 200 cemetery rating with random grave furniture. Corpse white skulls set the rating ceiling, so the sustainable route is better preparation and embalming paired with decoration that matches the body. The corpse and skull guide gives repeatable 12-, 16-, and 26-white-skull plans. Meanwhile, church quality comes from interior furniture and lighting; build to the actual sermon and upgrade threshold rather than filling every tile at once.

Once the cathedral and social papers are ready, the Merchant’s chain produces an accepted invitation. Giving that to the Bishop closes the pair: the Bishop yields the Mirror of Pride and the Merchant yields the Salty Fork. If one artifact is missing, re-open both dialogue trees; the pair completes through reciprocal hand-ins, not a single shared cutscene.

Advance Ms Charm and the Inquisitor without losing a choice

Ms Charm also begins with a five-Faith check. Her fake-coin request feeds Snake, while her missing-necklace investigation later feeds back from the Astrologer. In between, she asks for perfume and story work, then develops the business and jewelry steps. Her windmill-related request depends on the Astrologer’s calculations, and the late Vagner sequence requires the infusion and song work to be completed before the rescue path appears.

The Inquisitor appears on Wrath day. His early tasks include firewood and flyers, followed by vineyard access, wine, and the buffet operation. Treat the buffet as a production project: reserve its food and drink separately so ordinary tavern or personal consumption does not empty the required inventory on his day.

After the relevant burnings and cathedral-linked progress, the Inquisitor reveals dark organs and requests one dark brain, one dark heart, and one dark intestine. Do not assume the next three corpses will supply them. Inspect arriving bodies, store the required organs, and keep the dark heart earmarked for Snake only after the Inquisitor’s own set is secured.

The Inquisitor’s ceremony does not require blind obedience at the final decision; follow the dialogue that preserves the intended ending. His last paired exchange with Snake provides the Eternal Burning Coal. Ms Charm’s rescue sequence routes through the Astrologer and finally returns her Necklace. Those are the last two artifacts of this pair.

Stage the six artifacts before opening the portal

Place the following together and verify their names before approaching the portal:

  1. Endless Notebook from Snake;
  2. Golden Angle from the Astrologer;
  3. Mirror of Pride from the Bishop;
  4. Salty Fork from the Merchant;
  5. Necklace from Ms Charm;
  6. Eternal Burning Coal from the Inquisitor.

Make a manual backup before the final sequence if you are also cleaning achievements or DLC. The portal ending is the conclusion of the base quest, but DLC stories, platform-specific achievements, and production projects may be easier to finish before NPC schedules change. The achievement roadmap identifies the choices and DLC cutoffs worth protecting.

Diagnose a stopped quest by the item it owes

What appears stuck Check before waiting another week
Snake after dungeon materials Astrologer at 40 for restoration tools; Lighthouse Keeper for the Necronomicon; Inquisitor for dark-organ access
Astrologer’s daughter investigation Gypsy Baron and Ms Charm dialogue; mill calculations; required book quality
Bishop’s final upgrade 200 cemetery, 50 church, three gold carved-marble pieces, and aristocrat papers
Merchant after crates Shipment/fame requirement, dinner quality, Ms Charm promotion, then cathedral invitation
Ms Charm near the end Astrologer calculations and necklace lead; Vagner infusion/song; rescue dialogue
Dark organs never progress Complete the Inquisitor burnings and linked church progress; unlock the extraction technology; inspect new corpses

If the requested item is already in inventory but dialogue does not move, confirm its exact quality and variant. A silver book is not a gold book, an ordinary key is not the Active key, and a generic carved-marble piece is not necessarily the gold-quality version shown in the Bishop’s requirement.

Sources and version boundary

The dependency route was cross-checked against the official Steam listing, the game’s official community-wiki quest data, and multiple community walkthrough references. Its scope is the original PC title as updated to 1.405, with warnings for Stranger Sins interactions that alter base-chain hand-ins. Exact dialogue labels and console content availability can differ; when a current-client requirement conflicts with an old walkthrough, follow the client.
