The Mortal Shell II beta has a real endpoint: Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods. Treat everything before her as a compact test route, not as a miniature version of the entire August 20 game. The public build gives you the prologue, Marrow Keep, a slice of the first open region, optional trials, nine beta achievements, and one final major fight. It does not prove the final economy, item placements, balance, or every launch-day tutorial.
You can also begin here without finishing the first Mortal Shell. Cold Symmetry and Playstack call Mortal Shell II a standalone sequel. Returning players will recognize Shell possession and hardening, but old Fallgrim routes, stamina advice, temple orders, and boss solutions belong to the 2020 game. The sequel removes the stamina restriction from combat and builds its opening around a different hub, resource set, and world layout.
This route was checked against the currently available Open Beta and official product information on August 17, 2026. Devout Edition access can begin up to three days before the worldwide August 20 release. If your title screen no longer says Open Beta, use the launch-build audit near the end before following any exact location or achievement step.

Before the first Beacon, decide which version you are routing
Open the product name and build label before committing a run. Steam separates the full game, AppID 2584270, from the Open Beta, AppID 4711740. The beta is a demo application released on June 5; the full product has its own achievement set, 70 GB storage listing, and August launch schedule. A guide that switches between those applications without warning can send you after the wrong popup, wrong reward, or obsolete balance.
Use three visible checks:
- Application: confirm whether the launcher names the Open Beta or Mortal Shell II.
- Checkpoint vocabulary: the route below expects the opening village, Marrow Keep, Widow’s Overlook, Mushroom Village, and the corrupted path toward Magdalena.
- Achievement list: the beta presents nine small objectives. The launch list is much larger and uses different names for several similar story beats.
If any of those disagree, keep the route as a discovery checklist rather than a sequence of guaranteed triggers. Do not try to repair a launch save by installing an older beta, and do not assume a beta achievement will transfer. The two applications have separate metadata and progression boundaries.
Turn the prologue into three checkpoints
The opening is linear enough that navigation is not the hard part. The risk is walking past the systems the prologue is trying to teach and then reaching the scripted Tar Golem encounter without a retry plan.
Checkpoint one: leave the first village with a complete baseline
After communing with the Undermether, claim the Shell and weapon offered by the story. Ruk then points you onward. Before leaving, test the difference between a normal defensive answer, hardening, and the current Perfect Guard input on a low-pressure enemy. Mortal Shell II has no stamina bar to ration, but an unlimited attack resource is not an unlimited punish window. End a string when the enemy begins a committed response.
Pick up the visible Gold and Ventrium along the route, then inspect their labels in the inventory. Do not merge them into a generic “upgrade material” in your notes. The beta uses several progression currencies and sockets; knowing which number changed is more useful than simply remembering that a pickup sparkled.
Checkpoint two: cleanse the early Beacons before detouring
The first cleansed Beacon awards the Muradean Actuator in the documented beta route, opening weapon improvement. A later Beacon sits in Disciple’s Grotto. Activate each anchor before exploring a side room, because it converts an uncertain branch into a short repeatable run.
Past the early ritualist encounter and the bridge guard, there is an optional drop on the far-left side before leaving the bridge. That descent leads to Twisted Visage. Skip it on a fragile first pass; mark it and return after you have confirmed your recovery route. Inside the grotto, check the crates for hidden Gloom, use the next Beacon, and consider the left-hand visit to Garrick’s Den for Gold before advancing.
Checkpoint three: stop at Ruk’s warning
The warning before the torch is your Tar Golem preparation line. Rest, spend what the current Beacon allows, and decide whether you care about the beta-only Finish the Fight achievement. Taking the torch starts the encounter. A defeat still advances the story, which makes this mechanically different from an ordinary boss gate.
Do not let the Tar Golem close your beta checklist
For normal story progress, surviving is optional: the post-fight sequence continues after the intended loss. For the beta achievement, the Golem’s health must reach zero before that sequence takes control. That creates a one-way achievement checkpoint inside a fight the narrative permits you to lose.
On an achievement attempt, use this decision rule:
- Enter only after confirming that the beta application still shows Finish the Fight.
- Keep your safest damage option for the last portion of the bar. The result is measured before the story transition, not by a different cutscene.
- If defeat is imminent, use the arena edge to reset before the scripted loss completes, if the current build still returns you to the pre-fight state.
- If the cutscene has already saved the next state, do not keep searching the arena for a rematch that the beta route does not provide. Reload a clean pre-fight save if one exists, or start a separate beta run.
Do not carry that workaround into the full game without checking. The exposed launch list contains a differently worded Tar Golem condition, and launch autosave behavior may change. The safe fact is the beta trigger: reduce the bar fully before the forced transition and watch for the platform popup.
After the encounter, take the elevator, collect the Ovum, and follow the story transfer to Marrow Keep. Confirm the beta’s Reach Marrowkeep popup here. The official UI and current product pages spell the hub “Marrow Keep”; a few guides use “Morrow,” which is not a second location.
Use Marrow Keep as the reset between linear and open routes
Marrow Keep changes the job from “follow the corridor” to “choose a loop.” Before launching into the region, inventory four things: the Shell you can currently inhabit, the weapon you have actually practiced, the next affordable upgrade, and the nearest activated Beacon. If one entry is unknown, solve it in the hub rather than discovering the gap inside a boss arena.
Your first field target is Widow’s Overlook. Run the nearby trial on the left, then listen for Gorf. Giving Gorf a Weltcap produces a Marsh Pearl that can be sold for Coins in the beta. This is a useful economy test: note the item before and after the exchange, then check the merchant value instead of treating every mushroom as healing or every pearl as an upgrade.
The Great Arbiter of Flesh is close enough to tempt an immediate attempt. The cleaner route is to mark that arena, continue toward the map and Tiel, and finish at least the nearby trial content first. You gain a second Shell choice and more knowledge of the region without needing to grind a speculative farming loop.
Clear the first region in a deliberate loop
Mushroom Village is easier to remember as a clockwise set of tasks than as a pile of map icons. Start at its Beacon, finish the village interactions, open the optional dungeon, then leave through the route that points toward the corrupted gate.
| Stop | Action | Proof before moving on |
|---|---|---|
| Village center | Clear the hostile dancers and speak with the resident in each of the four houses. | Four conversations checked; central area safe. |
| Village Beacon | Cleanse it before opening branches. | Fast-travel/checkpoint entry appears in the current interface. |
| Candle puzzle | Light all three candles. | The chest opens and awards the Auspicious Stone. |
| Right-hand bridge | Cross toward the pyre, then face the cliff through the misplaced stone frame. | A statue appears; collect the Mushroom Village Key. |
| Left of the Beacon | Pass the traders and cage, then unlock the building behind them. | Shrine of Trials entrance opens. |
| South route | Locate Tiel near Ritual Grounds and complete the trial area. | Claim Tiel and the relevant corrupted-statue progress update. |
The key route has two useful failure signals. If no statue appears, return to the frame and adjust your facing toward the cliff rather than combing the whole village. If the locked building will not open, verify that the Mushroom Village Key entered the inventory; proximity to the door does not prove the statue pickup registered.
The documented beta can stall when a Ritual Grounds corrupted-statue trial stops spawning enemies. Treat that as a broken event, not a hidden puzzle. Restart the application, re-enter the dungeon, and go directly to the trial. Avoid opening the anomalously accessible cages on the recovery attempt. If the launch client fixes the event, remove this workaround from your route rather than repeating it by habit.
After the trial loop, take the path marked by the line of effigies. The spear-wielding enemy comes before a roach-like opponent that responds well to heavy attacks. Secure the Marksman Stone chest, then cleanse the Mushroom Village Gate Beacon. At this point the route should show Tiel, the village key dungeon, the regional map, and multiple trial completions—not just a straight line toward the final boss.

Open the corrupted route only after the Village is banked
The corrupted gate begins with a trapped stairway. Look for tripwires before descending; a projectile hit here is a route warning, not evidence that you need another level. Past the gate, clear the Sunken Village, reach the Beacon beyond its main encounter, and collect the Ovum tied to that anchor.
At the next split, take the right branch first if you want the shorter pickup check. Poison bursts guard the route to a pair of snake enemies and the chest containing the Shrike Stone. Return to the split, then take the left side toward the next Beacon and the Corroded Stone. This order makes the poison branch a contained excursion instead of something you must repeat after a later death.
The Wandering Shepherd tests target priority more than raw damage. The documented beta route links the sheep to the boss’s Break pressure, so clear the herd when it is sustaining the encounter, then use the opening on the Shepherd. If killing a sheep does not alter the Break state in your build, stop repeating an old rule and observe what the current UI actually changes.
Reach Magdalena with a tested loadout, not a borrowed phase script
Magdalena closes the public beta and awards her Memento, a Tarstone associated with Axe and Dagger in the tested route. The supplied boss-only page confirms that beta balance changed during testing but does not provide a trustworthy move table. Other fan pages invent weaknesses, exact damage types, and phase counters without readable first-party support. A fixed “three-hit punish” script would be guesswork.
Prepare the fight through evidence you can see:
- Spend carried Gloom and apply the upgrades you have already tested before crossing the arena threshold.
- Enter the first attempt intending to identify the end of each sequence. Answer once, then return to a distance where the next animation is visible.
- Use hardening after a committed swing when repositioning is no longer possible. Do not burn it on an attack you can already avoid cleanly.
- Practice Perfect Guard against one repeatable, readable strike. Expanding to every animation before confirming one timing makes failure impossible to diagnose.
- When a punish fails, record whether the boss continued a chain, tracked the reposition, or recovered before your hit. Each signal calls for a different adjustment.
Victory should produce Complete the Demo. If the fight ends but the beta remains open without that popup, first confirm the application and achievement service, then inspect whether a new patch changed the endpoint. Do not invent another zone past Magdalena simply because the full game advertises more than 60 dungeons.
Separate the nine beta unlocks from the launch list
A clean beta run can verify nine achievements. Five arrive along the principal route: claim the opening Shell, reach Marrow Keep, obtain Axe and Dagger, claim Tiel, and defeat Magdalena. Four require deliberate checks: take the Tar Golem to zero, defeat the Great Arbiter of Flesh, cleanse all three corrupted statues, and cleanse all seven beta Beacons.
Before ending the run, count from the interface rather than memory. The seven Beacons include two in the tutorial route, followed by Widow’s Overlook, Mushroom Village, Mushroom Village Gate, and two beyond the corrupted gate. The three statue trials are north of Widow’s Overlook, at the end of Ritual Grounds, and north of the gate Beacon in the documented build. A missing counter tells you which region to revisit; a missing story popup tells you to inspect the application or platform service.
The full game exposes a separate 53-trophy PS5 list, including the Platinum, with 52 non-Platinum achievements on platforms that support them. Similar names do not mean shared completion. Beta progress and beta unlocks should be treated as practice data unless the launch client explicitly imports something.
At launch, audit the route before repeating it
Run five checks when the full client opens. First, compare the product AppID and title. Second, read the current save-import or prologue-skip prompt instead of assuming the beta choice carries over. Third, verify the first Beacon reward and each currency label. Fourth, inspect the Tar Golem achievement wording before accepting the scripted transition. Fifth, confirm that Tiel, the key statue, the corrupted trials, and Magdalena still occupy the same branch.
If those points match, the beta route remains a useful opening scaffold. If only the geography matches, keep the navigation and discard the old rewards. If the hub or quest order changes, stop using the sequence entirely and rebuild it from current objectives. That is faster than forcing a polished launch build to behave like a June demo.
