Act 1 is not lost because you picked the “wrong” road to Moonrise Towers. It is lost when you cross a warning boundary while the Emerald Grove conflict is unresolved, or when a local emergency has already started and you rest instead of finishing it. The safest route therefore protects quest states first, then clears both the Underdark and Mountain Pass before choosing an Act 2 entrance.
This route was checked against the Patch 8 story state and the current Hotfix #36 boundary on August 17, 2026. Patch 8 was Larian’s final major content patch, while later hotfixes continued to address crashes and blockers. The main route is stable, but a modded game or an older save can still produce different dialogue, combat, and companion states. Keep a manual save before every region warning and trust the journal readback in your own client.
Use this route as a state order, not a mandatory map order
You can swap most exploration blocks without breaking the campaign. What should remain fixed is the order of commitments:
- Escape the Nautiloid and recruit the crash-region companions you want.
- Open the Overgrown Ruins and establish Withers at camp.
- Enter the Emerald Grove, collect its quests, and decide how you want the refugee conflict to end.
- Explore the Blighted Village, swamp, Risen Road, and Waukeen’s Rest without triggering an emergency you plan to abandon.
- Infiltrate the Goblin Camp and finish any non-hostile interactions before choosing the Grove outcome.
- Resolve the Grove and goblin-leader chain before accepting the Mountain Pass warning.
- Clear the Underdark and Grymforge, stopping at the elevator to the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
- Clear the Mountain Pass and Crèche Y’llek, then stop at its Act 2 exit.
- Choose either Act 2 entrance only after the Act 1 exit audit at the end of this guide.
This order is completion-friendly, not morally prescriptive. Raiding the Grove, defending it, exposing Kagha, siding with a faction, or avoiding a fight are role-playing choices. The route only prevents an accidental region transition from making that choice for you.
Build the camp while the crash map is still small
On the Nautiloid, freeing Shadowheart is optional, but doing it puts her on the beach immediately after the crash. If you leave her pod closed, the game provides later meetings; the practical route is simply less direct. The helm encounter is an escape: reach the transponder within the turn limit. Commander Zhalk and his weapon are an optional risk, not the win condition.
After the crash, recruit by geography so nobody is forgotten behind a later story decision:
- Shadowheart is on the beach if rescued, with alternate early locations if she was not.
- Astarion waits west of the wreck and begins his meeting with a deception.
- Gale is trapped in the unstable waypoint north of the wreck. Pulling him free adds both a wizard and an early personal problem to camp.
- Lae’zel is held in a hanging cage north of Gale. Resolve the tiefling confrontation, then break the cage floor with a ranged attack.
- Wyll appears in the fight outside the Grove and can be recruited inside.
- Karlach is reached later across the Risen Road. Wyll’s first instruction about her is not the only possible outcome, so talk before attacking if you want both companions.
Visit the Overgrown Ruins early. The combat and traps are manageable once the first four-person party is assembled, and the crypt establishes Withers at camp. His respec, hireling, and resurrection services make every later route easier to recover from. This is a structural upgrade, not an invitation to grind the ruins before recruiting anyone.
Open every Emerald Grove thread before closing one
The first gate battle creates a hub with several connected states. Speak to Zevlor, enter the ritual area, meet Kagha, and visit Nettie. Recruit Wyll, find Dammon if Karlach matters to the run, and talk to Zorru with Lae’zel present if you want her crèche lead. Save Arabella before treating the ritual as background scenery.
Do not reduce the Grove to “kill Kagha” or “kill the goblins” at the first prompt. Investigating Kagha can change how her confrontation resolves. Stealing the Sacred Idol while the Rite of Thorns is active can turn the Grove into a fight and collapse other refugee quests. If the goal is to keep options open, investigate first, settle the ritual state, and only then decide whether the idol job still belongs in this playthrough.
The beach, harpies, Arabella, Dammon, Rolan’s group, and the tiefling children are not interchangeable bits of XP. Survivors can reappear in later acts, while a dead or expelled NPC removes that future branch. Before leaving the Grove, read the journal for Save the Refugees, Investigate Kagha, Save Arabella, and any companion objective you deliberately started. A clear “completed” or chosen-failure state is safer than assuming a marker will wait.
Explore westward without sleeping through an emergency
The Blighted Village is the useful center of the surface map. Resolve its rooftop goblins by dialogue or combat, check the well if you want the spider route, and rescue Barcus at the windmill carefully. The brake lever stops the blades; the release lever throws him from them. That small label check preserves a gnome whose story can extend through Grymforge, Moonrise, and the Lower City.
Use the village to branch rather than to sweep randomly:
- South: the swamp and Auntie Ethel chain. Enter with a save before the final bargaining decision and do not assume every masked victim can be safely “rescued” by knocking them out in every state.
- North: the Risen Road, gnolls, the missing shipment, Karlach, and the paladins pursuing her. Talk to Karlach before treating the paladins’ version as fact.
- Northwest: Waukeen’s Rest and the githyanki patrol. Once the burning inn encounter is active, finish the rescue before taking a Long Rest; the fire is an immediate emergency, not a permanent set piece.
- West: the Goblin Camp. Keep this route social until its traders, prisoners, performances, and internal paths have served their purpose.
If the githyanki patrol becomes a fight while the party is under-levelled, the route has not failed. Dialogue can avoid that combat, and the patrol is not the same thing as entering the Mountain Pass. Make a save before Lae’zel approaches so a failed social roll does not force a battle you intended to postpone.
Infiltrate the Goblin Camp before choosing its final state
The camp accepts several disguises of authority: parasite dialogue, social checks, a drow identity, Sazza’s introduction, or simple cooperation. Use that access. Locate Halsin in the Worg Pens, Volo in captivity, Abdirak’s side interaction, the Zhentarim trader, and the three leaders before making the entire interior hostile.
Priestess Gut can be separated from the crowd. Minthara carries the Grove decision. Dror Ragzlin’s death turns the wider camp hostile, so do not treat him as the first isolated target. If you plan to defend the Grove, finish shopping, free prisoners you care about, unlock waypoints, and position escape routes before the leader chain closes.
Halsin’s rescue and the refugees’ outcome form one decision chain. Finish it before entering the Mountain Pass or the Shadow-Cursed Lands. The transition warning exists because travel can advance the Rite of Thorns and goblin/refugee conflict. It is not merely a level recommendation. A completionist run should see a settled Grove, an updated Halsin objective, and the camp celebration or its chosen alternative before crossing.
Clear the Underdark as three hubs, then stop at the lift
The Underdark is not a single corridor to Moonrise. Treat it as the Selûnite Outpost, Myconid Colony, and Grymforge. Multiple surface entrances exist, so use whichever your surface decisions opened; the route below does not require Priestess Gut’s room.
From the first safe foothold, reach the Myconid Colony and collect the sovereign, mushroom picker, poisoned gnome, Omeluum, missing boots, and duergar threads. Decide Glut’s request only after understanding which sovereign it opposes. Visit the Arcane Tower and sussur areas before boarding the Grymforge boat if you want the Underdark’s exploration content rather than a direct exit.

Grymforge introduces a local clock. Once the party reaches the cave-in and communicates with trapped Nere, do not take repeated Long Rests while you wander elsewhere. Obtain explosives, settle the duergar and gnome plan, and open the rubble while that rescue is active. The Adamantine Forge is a separate optional branch and can be handled after the Nere emergency.
Activate the Grymforge waypoint and inspect the elevator that leads upward, but do not ride it merely because the main quest points toward Moonrise. Finish the forge, gnomes, Nere, and any Myconid return objectives first. The elevator remains available after you visit the Mountain Pass.
Treat the Mountain Pass as the second branch, not the alternative branch
After the Grove conflict is settled, return to the githyanki patrol entrance and accept the Mountain Pass warning. The Rosymorn Monastery Trail contains Crèche Y’llek, Lae’zel’s cure attempt, the Blood of Lathander chain, traders, and major information about the artefact. It is too substantial to reduce to a shorter replacement for the Underdark.
Bring Lae’zel if her story matters. Save before the zaith’isk because the seat choice and checks affect the scene, and save again before the inquisitor and Vlaakith sequence. Dialogue can change Lae’zel’s loyalty and the crèche’s hostility; there is no universal “safe” line that preserves every role-playing goal.
Complete monastery exploration and any ceremonial-weapon puzzle before taking the hidden weapon. The Blood of Lathander route includes a failure state capable of destroying the monastery if the protective mechanism is not handled. When the crèche story is settled, unlock the western exit toward the Shadow-Cursed Lands, but pause at the transition.
Pick the Act 2 entrance by its opening problem
Both roads are valid and both regions can be explored in one playthrough. The Underdark elevator opens near Harpers who can guide a cooperative party toward Last Light Inn. The Mountain Pass opens near Absolute cultists and the drider convoy, creating an earlier choice over the Moonlantern. Neither entrance permanently determines which Act 2 faction you must support.
The next region adds the Shadow Curse. Ordinary light helps only in its weaker areas; deeper darkness requires stronger protection. If you want a route that prioritizes the safe hub, the Underdark entrance provides the most direct introduction to the Harpers. If Lae’zel’s story has just ended at the crèche and you prefer narrative continuity, the Mountain Pass convoy is coherent. The detailed lockout order continues in the Act 2 quest-order guide.
Do the Act 1 exit audit at a waypoint, not at the warning screen
Before entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands, stand at camp or a waypoint and verify the state you actually created:
- The Emerald Grove and refugee conflict has a deliberate outcome; it is not merely still listed.
- Halsin, Minthara, Wyll, Karlach, Lae’zel, Shadowheart, Gale, and Astarion are alive, recruited, dismissed, or opposed by choice rather than oversight.
- Waukeen’s Rest and the Grymforge cave-in are not active emergencies.
- The Underdark, Grymforge, Mountain Pass, and crèche objectives you wanted have journal readbacks.
- Dammon and any tieflings needed for later quests survived the Grove result.
- You made a manual save outside the Act 2 entrance and recorded which route it uses.
You can return to much of Act 1 during early Act 2, but that is not a license to leave the Grove unresolved. Act 2 later contains a harder boundary inside the Gauntlet of Shar that removes the old waypoints. Finish Act 1 while its map and consequences are still readable instead of relying on a future cleanup trip.
