Act 2 has one ordering mistake that can erase far more content than a lost battle: entering the Shadowfell before you have infiltrated Moonrise Towers, emptied its prison, and settled the quests tied to Last Light Inn. Moonrise is an infiltration target first and an assault target later. Treating it as a final dungeon from the moment it appears is what creates the lockout.
Research closed on August 17, 2026 with Patch 8 as the last major story-content baseline and Hotfix #36 as the current official build notice. The route assumes a deliberate Act 1 Grove outcome. It does not assume that the tieflings, Halsin, Minthara, Barcus, or other recurring characters survived; when a quest giver is absent, skip that branch rather than inventing a replacement.
Pin the only sequence that must not be reversed
Many side quests can be reordered. These nine blocks preserve the largest number of recoverable states:
- Reach Last Light Inn or otherwise secure a route through the lighter curse.
- Obtain reliable protection for the deeper curse.
- Collect the Last Light quests and prepare before speaking to Isobel.
- Infiltrate Moonrise Towers while the cult accepts the True Soul cover.
- Rescue the Moonrise prisoners and verify their arrival at safety.
- Clear Reithwin and complete the Art Cullagh, Thaniel, Arabella, Raphael, and companion branches you want.
- Finish the Gauntlet of Shar, but stop at the pool that warns about the region changing.
- Enter the Shadowfell, decide the Nightsong’s fate, and assault Moonrise.
- Finish the rooftop and Mind Flayer Colony before taking the road to Baldur’s Gate.
The earlier Act 1 route ends at either entrance to the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Both entrances join this sequence; they simply create different opening encounters.
Secure two levels of curse protection
Torches, the Light cantrip, and similar illumination handle the weaker edge of the curse. They are not reliable protection in the darkest zones around Reithwin and Moonrise. Plan to obtain a working Moonlantern or the pixie’s blessing before treating the whole map as open.
The Underdark entrance meets Harpers and naturally points toward Last Light Inn. The Mountain Pass entrance meets Absolute followers and can lead to Kar’niss, the drider carrying a Moonlantern. You may travel with the convoy, ambush it, cooperate with the Harpers, or reach Last Light by another line. Whichever choice you make, test it by walking a short distance into stronger shadow: the party should not begin accumulating the dangerous curse state.
If you free Dolly Dolly Dolly from Kar’niss’s lantern, the pixie blessing removes the need to carry the lantern and the Filigreed Feywild Bell can restore the blessing if it is lost. Keeping the pixie trapped gives you a physical light source that occupies a hand. Shadowheart’s unusual resistance does not protect the rest of the party, so do not use her health bar as the group’s safety test.
Turn Last Light into a quest ledger before defending it
Last Light Inn is both a safe zone and a concentration of characters whose survival can change later acts. Speak to Jaheira, Dammon, Alfira or the surviving tieflings, Barcus if present, Raphael, Mol, and the unconscious Art Cullagh before advancing the inn’s central scene. Check Karlach’s engine progress with Dammon while he is available.
Talking to Isobel begins the attack led by Marcus. Save immediately before that conversation, prepare crowd control and healing, and place the party where it can reach her. If Isobel is taken, the protective dome falls and much of the inn becomes shadow-cursed. The battle can continue, but the quest population, vendors, and several later payoffs change radically. “Marcus escaped” is not the only failure signal; Isobel leaving the room with him is the state that matters.
Keep Isobel from being surrounded rather than chasing every winged horror. Sanctuary, healing, body blocking, opportunity attacks, and disabling Marcus can buy the turns she needs. After the fight, walk the inn and confirm who remains. A journal update alone will not tell you whether a fragile NPC died at the edge of the room.
Visit Moonrise before the game calls for an assault
Moonrise Towers is designed to accept the party under its True Soul cover. Enter without starting a general fight. Watch the audience with Ketheric, speak to traders and named NPCs, search Balthazar’s room if your approach allows it, and collect any quest dialogue tied to Z’rell, Araj, or the Absolute. The goal is information and access, not floor-by-floor clearance.
Then descend to the prison. Depending on Act 1, the cells can contain tieflings, Wulbren and the Ironhand gnomes, and Minthara. Resolve Minthara’s torture-room sequence before the tower becomes hostile if you intend to recruit or save her. Patch 8 specifically improved her appearance and dialogue states after a nonlethal Act 1 outcome, but that does not revive a Minthara who was killed.
For the prisoners, prepare the escape before opening cell doors:
- Speak to both groups and learn their plan.
- Reach the tunnels behind the cells and remove the walls yourself, or give Wulbren a bludgeoning tool.
- Deal with the Warden and scrying eyes in a controlled area if stealth will not hold.
- Free both cells close together so one group is not exposed while the other still waits.
- Use the boat behind the cells and select Last Light Inn when the escape succeeds.
Return to Last Light and talk to the rescued NPCs. Their physical arrival and reward dialogue are the readback. Entering the Shadowfell before this rescue automatically closes the prison quests, so “I will free them during the assault” is not a valid backup plan.
Clear Reithwin by dependency rather than compass direction
Reithwin Town contains several apparently independent buildings, but some provide items or information for the safe hub. Use the House of Healing to obtain the lute needed for Art Cullagh. The Tollhouse and Waning Moon contain Thorm relatives who can be defeated by combat or, with the right dialogue, by their own obsessions. The Mason’s Guild supplies history, equipment, and a route into the Selûnite resistance investigation.
Wake Art with the lute, then follow Halsin’s portal sequence. Protect the portal by controlling waves rather than chasing enemies away from it; area denial, persistent surfaces, and ranged attacks are more useful than a party scattered across the shore. Halsin’s return identifies Thaniel’s missing half and leads to Oliver. Reuniting them completes the quest’s essential work, but the land’s visible recovery waits until Ketheric is defeated.
Other branches should be closed while their people are still available:
- Find Arabella’s parents and report back to her rather than leaving the journal at “search.”
- Find Rolan if his rescue has triggered; discovering his absence is the start of an urgent local search.
- Advance Raphael and Astarion’s Yurgir bargain before deciding the orthon’s fate.
- Complete He Who Was, the Selûnite resistance, and other Reithwin cases before the Shadowfell if their outcomes matter.
- Visit the crèche or remaining Act 1 areas now if the old waypoints still hold anything important; the Shadowfell warning will remove that return route.
Enter the Gauntlet with four decisions already understood
Open the Grand Mausoleum and descend into the Gauntlet of Shar only after Moonrise reconnaissance. Bring Shadowheart if you care about her companion story; excluding her from its decisive sequence can make her leave. The Gauntlet also intersects Raphael’s contract, Balthazar’s orders, the Silent Library, and the Nightsong.
Before descending to the Shadowfell pool, verify four things:
- Prison: the tieflings and Ironhands are rescued, dead by choice, or absent because of Act 1—not still waiting in cells.
- Last Light: Isobel, Art, Halsin, Thaniel, Arabella, Rolan, and Dammon have the states you intend.
- Gauntlet: the trials, Umbral Gem path, Silent Library, spear decision, Yurgir, and Balthazar have been handled or deliberately left.
- Old maps: no Wilderness, Underdark, Grymforge, or Mountain Pass objective is being saved for later.
The water at the bottom presents a clear warning that the region will change. That is the Act 2 point of no return. Make a named manual save outside the pool. Going through removes Act 1 waypoints and advances or closes multiple Act 2 quests.
Let the Nightsong decision define the assault state
Inside the Shadowfell, the party reaches Dame Aylin and the culmination of Shadowheart’s Shar path. Balthazar intervenes if he remains alive. Fighting him in the Shadowfell adds ledges, undead, and the danger of being shoved into the void; removing him earlier changes that tactical problem but not the need for a final Nightsong decision.
Sparing or killing Aylin affects Shadowheart, Last Light, Ketheric’s immortality, and later characters. Do not choose by a promised reward list alone. Save before the dialogue, let Shadowheart speak if her arc matters, and read the immediate journal and companion response after the scene. A persuasion route, a trusted-companion route, and a player-command route are not emotionally or mechanically identical.
Once the Shadowfell resolves, Moonrise is no longer an infiltration hub. The assault begins, traders and prison routines are gone, and the earlier rescue window has closed.
Carry enough resources through the rooftop and colony
Return to Moonrise for the assault. Jaheira can participate, but exposed AI movement can get her killed; if preserving her matters, keep control of her where the dialogue permits and do not let her charge unsupported. Clear the entrance and upper floors, then make a separate save before the rooftop Ketheric fight.

After Ketheric retreats, the opening into the Mind Flayer Colony is another commitment. Once inside, ordinary camp travel and fast travel are unavailable until the act boss is resolved. Search the colony before taking its final elevator: Zevlor, Mizora, Us, the necrotic laboratory, and other surviving threads are located here. Use the restoration device before the final confrontation if it remains available in your difficulty and ruleset.
The last battle changes from Ketheric to the Apostle of Myrkul. Free a bound Aylin quickly if she is present, deny the arena a growing supply of necromites, and respect the Apostle’s anti-healing area rather than stacking injured characters at the platform edge. The correct failure readback is not “damage too low” by default: an unreachable Nightsong, unchecked necromites, or party members trapped in the bone-chill zone can each be the real cause.
Read the land before taking the road west
After Ketheric falls, speak to the surviving allies at Moonrise. If Thaniel was restored, the departure sequence shows the Shadow Curse beginning to lift. Recruit Jaheira where available and check Halsin’s status before leaving. The road to Baldur’s Gate creates the next act boundary; do not cross it while a colony rescue or Moonrise conversation is still unresolved.
The Act 3 dependency chain—coronation, Iron Throne, Steel Watch Foundry, Gortash, Orin, and the Morphic Pool—is mapped in the Act 3 quest-order guide. Make a manual save before leaving the Shadow-Cursed Lands so the end-of-act party and companion states remain recoverable.
