Act 1 can leave a character permanently weaker even when the main quest marker keeps moving. The route below protects five high-value outcomes: Beira’s Cold Resistance, Crowbell’s weapon-set points, the King in the Mists Spirit reward, Una’s Lost Lute points, and Candlemass’s maximum Life. It also opens the Salvage Bench before Count Geonor.
This route is written for the Early Access campaign as it stood after patch 0.5.4f in August 2026. Area layouts are procedural, so compass directions are less reliable than exits, checkpoints, quest items, and the icons left on the world map. If a named side objective has no completed icon, assume it still needs checking.
Use the world map as a missing-reward detector
Before leaving an area, open the underground map and then the act map. A skull or quest marker that is still bright is a better signal than how much fog you have cleared. Permanent consumables must also be used after they drop; carrying a Head of the Winter Wolf or Gembloom Skull does not apply its bonus.
- Return later instead of stalling: Beira and Crowbell are accessible early but can punish an under-geared character. Their rewards remain worth a short waypoint return.
- Keep quest items until the hand-in: Una’s Lute and Renly’s Tools solve different jobs. The lute becomes passive points after speaking to Una; the tools unlock Salvaging through Renly.
- Spend weapon-set points deliberately: these are not extra universal passives. They fund branches that activate with the matching weapon set. The separate attributes, Spirit, and weapon-set points guide explains the allocation rule.
Clearfell: take the resistance now or mark it for later
After the Riverbank tutorial and Bloated Miller, enter Clearfell and find the encampment waypoint first. Beira of the Rotten Pack roams the middle portion of the zone. Her cold attacks are severe at level two, but the permanent reward matters all the way through the act: defeat her, pick up the Head of the Winter Wolf, and consume it for +10% Cold Resistance.
If repeated freezes or flask depletion prevent a clean kill, do not grind the same attempt. Continue to the Mud Burrow or Grelwood, add cold resistance, and return through the waypoint. The completion check is not merely a dead boss: the consumable must be gone from inventory and the bonus should appear in the character’s resistance total.
The Mud Burrow and the Devourer are optional for campaign progress. The fight is useful for an early support gem, but it is not one of the permanent checkpoints protected by this route. Prioritize it only if the gem advances the skill you are already using.
Red Vale to the Tree of Souls: finish the dependency before moving on
From Grelwood, enter the Red Vale and collect the three runed girdles from their obelisks. Return them to Renly, take the runic spikes, and go back to the Tree of Souls in Grelwood. The spikes advance Secrets in the Dark and open the Grim Tangle path. This is a dependent chain; clearing random edges of Grelwood before finishing Red Vale only creates extra backtracking.
The Grim Tangle is a transition area, not a reward hunt. Follow the route to the Cemetery of the Eternals. If the path seems to fold back into cleared ground, reset your reference point at the most recent checkpoint rather than searching by a memorized left-or-right instruction.
Cemetery: both key pieces come before Lachlann
The cemetery branch contains two tombs. Defeat Draven in the Mausoleum of the Praetor and Asinia in the Tomb of the Consort, then make sure both key pieces are registered before confronting Lachlann. The tomb order is flexible; the dependency is not. If the memorial gate will not progress, reopen the quest panel and verify that neither key boss remains active.
After Lachlann, return to Clearfell Encampment and complete the revival of the Hooded One. This is the first important systems unlock: the Hooded One can refund passive points for Gold. You do not need to rebuild immediately, but unlocking the service gives you a recovery path if later gear no longer matches your passive tree.
Hunting Grounds: split the visit into power and progression
The Hunting Grounds feeds several branches, so use the waypoint as a hub rather than trying to empty the entire map in one circuit.
1. Crowbell is a permanent-power detour
Crowbell awards 2 Weapon Set Passive Skill Points. The arena starts cramped and the boss hits hard enough that an early kill is not mandatory. Fight with open space behind you, avoid committing to long animations during a wind-up, and return later if a single mistake consumes most of your Life. The reliable completion signal is the weapon-set point reward, not just the boss icon.
2. Freythorn gives the first campaign Spirit
In Freythorn, activate all three ritual altars before entering the King in the Mists encounter. During the fight, read the color of the curse rather than panic-rolling:
- A purple affliction demands movement. Keep walking or repositioning until it ends.
- A red affliction punishes movement. Stop and hold position until it clears.
This is the fight’s most important decision rule. A correct response to the curse is worth more than squeezing in another attack. After the King dies, consume the Gembloom Skull for +30 maximum Spirit and take the Uncut Spirit Gem. Spirit is a reservation budget for persistent effects; it is not a mana-like resource that refills after being spent.
3. The Ogham exits continue the act
Once the Spirit reward is secured, follow the Ogham branch. If inventory is full, return to town before entering a boss arena. A portal used for cleanup is cheaper than abandoning a quest consumable among ordinary drops.
Ogham Farmlands: do not walk past the lute hut
Search the Farmlands for the hut containing Una’s Lute. The exact hut position changes with the generated layout, so work from the zone boundary and check enclosed structures rather than following a fixed compass callout. Take the lute to Una in town to receive 2 Weapon Set Passive Skill Points.
Do the hand-in before forgetting which act still owns the item. If the lute remains in your quest inventory, the reward has not been granted. This is one of the simplest Act 1 bonuses to miss because it does not block the road to the manor.
Ogham Village: unlock Salvaging before the manor
Renly’s Tools sit in Ogham Village. Recover them and speak to Renly in Clearfell Encampment to unlock the Salvage Bench. Salvaging quality or socketed gear turns unwanted finds into crafting components; selling every marked item before this unlock throws away that option.
The village also contains the Executioner. Against large telegraphed swings, attack only after the impact or after a committed movement finishes. If the arena fills with pressure, use short casts or strikes and preserve a lane for a dodge roll. The route continues from the village toward Ogham Manor.

Ogham Manor: Candlemass before Count Geonor
Ogham Manor is multi-floor and easy to treat as a straight sprint to the act boss. Stop for Candlemass, the Living Rite. The boss drops Candlemass’s Essence; consume it for +20 maximum Life. If the world-map icon is still unfinished after you reach Count Geonor’s floor, backtrack through checkpoints rather than ending the act without it.
Prepare for Count Geonor in town: improve cold resistance, use a Life flask whose recovery is not badly under-leveled, and check that the main damage skill has current support gems. A cold charm is useful when available, but it does not replace basic resistance and Life.
Geonor phase: dodge the committed attacks, not every movement
Geonor’s human-form weapon swings create readable attack windows. Stay near enough to see the wind-up, move through or away from the committed line, then answer with a short damage sequence. Repeatedly running to the edge makes the return angle harder to judge and can leave the character without room for the next pattern.
Putrid Wolf phase: use the voice and fog as timing information
During the fog sequence, kill the lesser wolves to restore flask charges, but listen for Geonor’s voice line and be ready for the lunge that follows. Do not stand still to finish the last add when the cue begins. Later area attacks reward a calm move out of the marked space; dodge once with intent rather than chaining rolls into the next hazard.
If the fight fails late, diagnose the failure before retrying:
- Flasks empty before the fog: damage or avoidance is too low in the first phase; upgrade the weapon or shorten unsafe attack strings.
- Deaths occur on the lunge: sound and voice cues are being ignored while targeting adds.
- Cold damage erases the Life pool: revisit Beira if necessary, improve cold resistance, and equip a relevant charm.
- No room remains: reposition earlier; do not let repeated retreat turn the arena edge into your default fighting position.
Act 1 exit audit
Before accepting the caravan transition, verify the following in the client:
- Head of the Winter Wolf consumed: +10% Cold Resistance.
- Crowbell reward received: 2 Weapon Set Passive Skill Points.
- Gembloom Skull consumed: +30 maximum Spirit.
- Una’s Lute handed in: 2 Weapon Set Passive Skill Points.
- Renly’s Tools handed in: Salvage Bench available.
- Candlemass’s Essence consumed: +20 maximum Life.
- Hooded One revived: passive refund service available.
The next campaign leg has a different routing problem: three relic objectives, an Ascendancy trial unlock, and a two-stage final boss. Continue with the Act 2 relic and Jamanra route, or use the permanent bonuses checklist if this is a cleanup run.
Sources and version note
Game identity and original media were checked against the official Path of Exile 2 Steam page. Campaign sequencing was reconciled against the current client boundary and Grinding Gear Games’ 0.5.0 campaign changes, then cross-checked with current community route references. Path of Exile 2 remains in Early Access, so use the in-client world map and quest reward text when a later patch changes a zone or reward.
