Path of Exile 2 Character Setup: Attributes, Spirit, Respec, and Weapon Set Points

When a Path of Exile 2 build stops working after an upgrade, do not start by refunding the tree. First identify the failed contract. Red requirement text points to Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence. A disabled persistent skill points to Spirit reservation or its support gems. A passive branch disappearing after a swap points to Weapon Set allocation. Only a genuinely wrong tree calls for a Gold respec.

The diagnostic order below avoids spending Gold to solve an equipment problem and avoids adding attributes to solve a Spirit reservation. It uses the Early Access campaign and patch 0.5.4f as the August 2026 boundary; client tooltips remain authoritative for balance-sensitive numbers.

Start with the exact failure signal

What you see Likely system First check
Gear or gem has a red requirement Attributes Hover the item and note the missing stat and amount
Persistent effect cannot be enabled Spirit Compare total and reserved Spirit; inspect support reservations
Build works on weapon I but not weapon II Weapon Set Points or item requirements Swap while the passive tree is open
A desired passive is trapped behind unwanted nodes Respec connectivity Trace a refundable path from the outer end inward
Damage fell after changing gear Several possible systems Re-equip the old item and compare one variable at a time

Attributes are requirements first, secondary stats second

Path of Exile 2 uses three primary attributes. Their baseline effects explain why a small attribute change can alter survivability or resource totals, but their most immediate job during the campaign is meeting the requirement printed on equipment and skill gems.

  • Strength: each point grants 2 maximum Life and commonly gates armour-oriented equipment, martial weapons, and Strength-aligned gems.
  • Dexterity: each point grants 5 Accuracy and commonly gates evasion equipment, ranged or agile weapons, and Dexterity-aligned gems.
  • Intelligence: each point grants 2 maximum Mana and commonly gates Energy Shield equipment, magical weapons, and Intelligence-aligned gems.

Do not read “Strength weapon” as “Strength automatically scales every attack made with it.” Damage comes from the exact modifiers, skill tags, and passive effects involved. An attribute may unlock the item and contribute its baseline stat without being the build’s primary damage multiplier.

Use the cheapest reversible attribute fix first

  1. Note the exact missing amount on the item or gem.
  2. Check whether an existing piece was supplying that attribute. Removing one ring can invalidate several other items at once.
  3. Use nearby flexible +5 Any Attribute passive nodes when the gap is small and the path already travels through them.
  4. Compare a gear modifier when the passive detour would be large.
  5. Recheck the requirement after the item is equipped; a self-supporting item can become invalid again when swapped.

A temporary attribute node is often cheaper than rewriting the entire build. Once better gear supplies the requirement, refund that node deliberately rather than leaving it as invisible tree debt.

Spirit is reserved capacity, not a recovering bar

Spirit powers persistent effects such as auras, self-reviving minions, and meta skills. Enabling one reserves part of the maximum; that reserved amount remains unavailable until the effect is disabled. Waiting, drinking a Mana flask, or leaving combat does not refill reserved Spirit because nothing was spent.

Support Gems can change a persistent skill’s reservation. A setup that fit yesterday may stop fitting after a support is added even though maximum Spirit did not change. Always hover the final supported skill, not the unsupported base gem.

Current guaranteed campaign Spirit

  • Act 1, King in the Mists: using the Gembloom Skull raises maximum Spirit by 30.
  • Act 3, Ignagduk: consume the Gemrot Skull for +30 maximum Spirit.
  • Interlude III, Lythara: consume the Gemcrust Skull for +40 maximum Spirit.

That is 100 campaign Spirit in the current four-act-and-Interlude structure. Old articles that promise another three 30-Spirit rewards in Cruel describe a superseded campaign. Equipment and some class mechanics can add Spirit while their conditions are met, but those contributions disappear when the item or condition changes.

Repair an over-reserved setup without guessing

  1. Disable all persistent effects.
  2. Enable the effect that defines the build.
  3. Add the next effect by survival or damage value, not by gem level.
  4. Insert support gems one at a time and watch the reservation change.
  5. Leave deliberate unreserved capacity only if another effect needs to toggle on during a swap or test.

If a minion dies and later revives, its Spirit is still reserved during the downtime. Disabling the skill, not the minion’s death, releases the reservation.

Change one dependency at a time. A gear swap can alter attributes, Spirit, defences, and the active weapon branch simultaneously.

Unlock respec, then work backward through connected nodes

Passive refunds become available after the Act 1 cemetery chain revives the Hooded One in Clearfell Encampment. Speak to the Hooded One and choose the passive-refund service. Refunds cost Gold; the live interface shows the actual price, so fixed cost tables age poorly.

The tree must remain connected. If the target passive supports other allocated nodes farther out, it cannot be removed first. Start at the outer tip of the unwanted branch and refund toward the shared trunk. Preview the full price before confirming so a partial refund does not strand the character with no Gold and no finished replacement route.

Use a respec budget, not a respec impulse

Before paying, write the change as a small transaction:

  • Remove: name the branch and count the path nodes that must also go.
  • Keep: protect attributes needed by currently equipped gear and gems.
  • Add: confirm the destination is reachable with the refunded points.
  • Test: compare the same skill, target, and weapon before and after.

Do not sell the old gear until the new tree has passed a combat test. If the plan fails, the old item provides a stable reference while you diagnose the difference.

Weapon Set Points create conditional branches

Weapon Set Points do not become ordinary passive points. They let each of the two weapon configurations activate its own conditional path in addition to the passive trunk shared by both sets. When the character swaps weapons—manually or because a skill invokes the other set—the matching conditional nodes become active and the other set’s nodes turn off.

The allowance is not divided between the sets. If the campaign grants two weapon-set points, set I can allocate up to two and set II can also allocate up to two. Those two layouts are alternate states, not four simultaneously active universal nodes.

Build the trunk before the branches

Use ordinary passive points for travel and effects both weapon setups require: core Life, broadly relevant defences, shared attributes, and the route toward useful clusters. Then select weapon set I in the passive interface and assign its colored branch toward nodes used by set I. Switch the selector to set II and build the alternate branch.

A practical example is a ranged set that specializes nearby projectile nodes and a close-range set that uses a defensive or melee cluster. The shared trunk gets the character to the junction. The conditional points finish a short branch on each side. Trying to build two completely separate trees exceeds what the system is designed to provide.

Test the swap in the tree and in combat

  1. Equip both intended weapon sets and satisfy every item requirement.
  2. Open the passive tree and switch to set I; note the active colored path and stat totals.
  3. Switch to set II and confirm the alternate branch activates without disconnecting required nodes.
  4. Use each set’s real skill on the same enemy type.
  5. If a skill fails, recheck its weapon restriction, attributes, and Spirit—not only the passive branch.

Weapon-set allocations can be refunded through the same respec service. Because their paths still obey connectivity, unwind an outer conditional node before the node linking it to the shared trunk.

Where the current campaign grants all 24 set points

The current campaign distribution is four points in each of Acts 1, 2, 3, and 4; two in Interlude I; two in Interlude II; and four in Interlude III. Commonly missed sources include Una’s Lute, the Fallen Dekhara hand-in, the Sacrificial Heart ritual, the Omniphobia return conversation, the Yeti-to-Hilda hand-in, and the final Hooded One conversation.

The detailed permanent bonuses checklist identifies every source and corrects the old Blind Beast location. If the Hooded One service itself is still locked, follow the cemetery portion of the Act 1 route.

A four-pass repair for a broken character

  1. Equipment pass: remove red requirements and confirm both weapon sets remain valid.
  2. Reservation pass: rebuild persistent effects from the most important one outward.
  3. Passive pass: identify shared trunk nodes and conditional weapon branches.
  4. Gold pass: only now refund the smallest connected set of genuinely wrong nodes.

After each pass, test before changing the next system. That preserves the evidence needed to tell whether the fix worked. Multiple simultaneous changes can produce a stronger character while hiding which dependency was actually broken—or a weaker one with no obvious cause.

Evidence boundary

The developer’s Steam listing for the game confirmed identity, Early Access status, and dual-specialization support. Present campaign reward locations were compared with the 0.5.0 developer patch record. Older attributes, Spirit, refund, and weapon-set explainers were used only where their mechanisms matched the current campaign and interface; old Cruel totals, fixed Gold prices, and balance-sensitive equipment claims were not carried forward.
