The Pale Mimic Walkthrough: First Hunt to the Default Ending

Rocky leading the player through a bright snowy forest in The Pale Mimic

The calendar is the real progression switch in The Pale Mimic. Advancing it consumes the days of food shown beside the cabin window and starts the next scripted event; roaming the forest does not create an endless survival loop. A safe run therefore repeats one disciplined sequence: finish the current objective, bank meat in the shed, return to the cabin, check any optional item, and only then touch the calendar.

This walkthrough follows the August 17, 2026 retail build to the default ending. It treats voices as untrusted, Rocky as the route marker, and the shotgun as a way to make the Mimic retreat rather than a weapon that can finish it. Those three rules prevent nearly every avoidable failure.

Lock in the cabin loop before the first hunt

The radio and daily log are story readbacks. They explain the federal search for Jason and record what happened on each active date, but neither replaces the objective panel. The calendar is different: interacting with it commits the run to the next day. Do not use it while a pickup, radio message, or shed deposit is still pending.

When the first hunting objective appears on January 4, leave with Rocky and stay behind him. The dog does the tracking; trying to sweep the map independently only makes the return harder. Once he stops at the animal, take the shot, approach the carcass, and use the interaction prompt to butcher it. The food counter changes only after the meat is handled and then stored, so a kill on the ground is not yet a completed supply run.

Carry the meat to the small shed near the cabin. If the terrain has turned you around, open the pause-map and use the star as the cabin anchor. Deposit first, walk into the cabin, and wait for the objective to change to the calendar instruction. That objective change is the clean confirmation that the hunt has fully closed.

The cabin is a checkpoint hub, but a voice outside never proves that the speaker is safe.

January 7-12: learn the emergency route before the forest turns hostile

On January 7, the contact’s call replaces the normal hunt. Exit immediately and follow Rocky to the crashed truck. The critical navigation rule is the same as a hunt: the dog is leading to a scripted destination, while a human-sounding cry can be bait. Investigate the crash area until the objective changes to Get back to the cabin, quickly, then reverse the route instead of searching deeper into the woods.

The Contacts’ Journal beside the truck is an optional achievement pickup, but the story does not require it. Take it while already at the wreck if you are building a secret-ending run; otherwise the correct main-story action is the fast return. The daily log dated January 7 confirms that the contact is gone and that the distant screams cannot be trusted.

Food reaches zero before the January 12 supply run. Follow Rocky, kill and butcher the animal, and verify that the counter rises when the meat is processed. Do not read a larger number as permission to skip the shed: the deposit objective must still resolve before the calendar becomes safe to use.

The meat-shed ambush changes what the gun is for

After the January 12 cycle, the game sends Jason back to investigate the meat shed. Enter with the gun ready, but do not approach this as a boss fight. The Mimic is bullet-resistant. Aimed pressure and shots interrupt its approach and force it to give ground; they do not justify following it into the trees.

Keep the shed and cabin behind you as known exits. When the creature closes, put the reticle on its body, fire only as needed to break the rush, and move toward the cabin as soon as the objective changes. A red or heavily distorted screen means the encounter is already too close; continuing to stand in the open to test damage wastes the space the gun just created.

The January 17 log is the mechanical lesson in plain language: bullets annoy the creature, it can clear a large distance in a leap, and it already knows Jason’s name. From this point on, hearing a familiar person is evidence of danger, not a reason to open a door.

A shot is successful when it restores distance. Chasing the retreat removes that advantage.

Three cabin tests ask the same question in different voices

The first explicit choice arrives after the January 20 hunt. The objective says Open the door or don’t, and the voice imitates the missing contact. Leave the door shut. There is no useful item outside during this test, and the January 22 log records that the Mimic loses patience when the trick fails.

On the next visit, the objective is clearer: Don’t open the door. This time the sound imitates Rocky. Look through the window if you want the visual confirmation, but do not convert that inspection into a door interaction. The real Rocky is already accounted for; the creature can copy his noise but cannot become him.

The February 11 test uses the contact’s walkie-talkie and pretends that rescue has arrived. Again, keep the cabin closed and let the scene resolve. Rocky waking and reacting is the story’s confirmation that the transmission is a lure. The delivery changes, but the decision rule does not: an audio cue is never stronger evidence than the objective panel and Rocky’s physical location.

January 25 is a recovery run to the southeast truck

When Rocky becomes sick, the objective identifies the medicine precisely: retrieve antibiotics from the crashed truck east of the cabin, near the bottom-right of the pause-map. This is the same wreck used during the contact event, so do not follow a new voice into the forest. Use the map, reach the truck, take the antibiotics, and turn back as soon as the objective changes.

The return is the risky half because the Mimic can call from off route. Keep moving toward the cabin star. You are not being asked to locate the speaker or hunt while Rocky is ill. At the cabin, interact with the required treatment point and wait for the objective to return to calendar progression. The January 25 log confirms that the antibiotics were administered; January 29 confirms that Rocky recovered.

February hunts become escort-and-deposit problems

The January 29 cycle begins normally, but later February hunts add fog, wolves, and direct interference. Preserve the sequence even when the screen becomes noisy:

  1. Let Rocky find the animal; do not spend ammunition firing into fog or at an uncertain sound.
  2. Kill and butcher the marked prey, then let the food counter update.
  3. Follow Rocky toward the shed. If the Mimic appears, face it and use the gun to hold it away from the dog and route.
  4. Store the meat before returning to the cabin. A retreating creature is not a new objective.

On the February 7 return, the objective explicitly says to use the gun to protect Jason and Rocky. On February 28 it again says to protect both of them and reach the shed. In both cases, the success condition is the deposit, not a kill. Fire to open the path, advance while the creature withdraws, and refuse the temptation to chase.

The February 19 hunt includes wolves. The verified run reached the shed without turning them into a required fight; the daily log says they reconsidered when they saw Rocky. Treat them as a positioning warning. Keep the carcass route moving and reserve the gun for an attacker that actually blocks it.

Repair the receiver, then survive the early-March breach

When the radio signal fails on February 24, follow Rocky to the receiver dish. The objective is to repair the equipment, not search the whole ridge. Approach the dish, complete its interaction, and return once the calendar objective comes back. An optional audio log lies near the antenna, but it belongs to the separate collectible route and is not required for story progress.

A later night asks Jason to go outside and follow noises. This is a scripted investigation, distinct from a door lure: the objective itself authorizes leaving. Stay on the narrow sound path until the sequence returns control to the cabin. If a sound pulls away from that route while the objective does not update, stop extending the search.

In early March, Go to the meat shed to prepare today’s food changes into Survive. Aim your gun at it to fend it off. Do exactly that. Keep the creature in the reticle, use shots when it commits, and hold the cabin-side space rather than running into the woods. The event ends on survival state; its damage resistance has not changed.

At the helicopter, recorder comes before the blood trail

The March 9 event begins with Find and investigate the helicopter crash site. Move toward the wreck and inspect it until the objective names the flight recorder. The recorder is nearby on the snow, not back at the cabin and not at the end of the blood trail. Secure it before following any voice.

Only after the recorder interaction does the objective become Follow the blood trails to find the pilots. Track the visible blood from the wreck. The creature imitates a pilot during this section, so use the trail and objective change—not the call—as the route proof. Once the pilots’ state has been established, the instruction switches to a quick cabin return. Leave immediately; the crash zone has already supplied the story item it requires.

The Dossier beside the wreck is optional. If you are pursuing all achievements, take it during the first crash inspection, before the flight-recorder and blood-trail handoffs pull attention away. The main story remains completable without it.

Finding Rocky ends in close-range prompts, not a firearms duel

After the last ordinary food cycle, advancing the calendar eventually produces Find Rocky. Leave the cabin and move toward the sound even though Jason states that it may be Rocky or the creature. This time the objective authorizes the pursuit. Keep to the traveled snow corridor and rock openings; a long detour into the open basin is not part of the demonstrated path.

The Mimic forces close-range encounters during this search. Follow the visible interaction prompts rather than trying to solve each grab with ordinary ranged fire. The first struggle establishes that a well-placed blade can pierce its skin. Continue along the only open route after it withdraws. The later confrontation is also scripted around close contact, and Rocky intervenes before the objective finally changes.

When Rocky is physically present and Go home appears, the threat sequence is over. Turn toward the cabin route and keep the dog with you. Reaching the ending after this handoff unlocks The End, the default-ending achievement. Do not delay at the final cliff looking for an unmarked second fight.

Scope of this route

This is a retail main-story route, not a claim that every hidden item or ending condition is included. Seven optional objects, the I See You shot, No Rush, and the archive-box condition for Closure are covered in the collectibles and secret ending guide. They are kept separate because a player can finish this route without them, while the alternate ending requires deliberate dated detours.

The supplied 82-minute run verifies one successful default-ending sequence. It does not prove that every forest spawn is fixed to an exact coordinate, and the retail store does not publish a numbered client patch as of August 18, 2026. If an encounter moves slightly, protect the current objective state: Rocky for navigation, the shed for deposits, the cabin star for returns, and the gun for distance.

Sources and release boundary

Identity, retail release state, Steam AppID 4415740, developer/publisher credit, official media, and the 11-achievement count were checked against the current Steam record and appdetails response. The dated objectives and action sequence were verified from the supplied retail gameplay recording. Current community guides were used only to separate optional pickups from required story steps. Demo-era material was not used to extend the retail route.
