The Lantern of the Laughless Saint Nuisance Quest: Cart, Goods Bag, and Shack

A coastal settlement below the Tower in The Lantern of the Laughless Saint

The hard part of Nuisance is not the cart fight; it is identifying the rewarded shack. Start with Pichess in Magdal’s Rest, follow the south road to two skeletons and the attacked cart area, take the item named Goods Bag, then return for the key. When Pichess describes a one-story building with a stool, stop using the stool as the sole clue: several nearby homes fit that description.

These steps match Hotfix 4 and the Early Access UI checked on August 19, 2026 in a 291-second launch-day walkthrough. If quest placement, combat balance, or landmarks change in a later client, follow the objective name and live quest log.

From the arrival shore, enter Magdal’s Rest and orient toward the large skull landmark. Continue into town until you reach the local merchant Pichess. The quest is his missing-merchandise problem: skeletons attacked a cart, and the objective is to recover the goods. Do not run the road first and hope that looting the area will retroactively explain the task. Accept Nuisance and confirm that the quest log names the recovery objective.

That log check separates three different states that otherwise look similar:

  • No Nuisance entry: the conversation did not start the quest, or you spoke to the wrong merchant.
  • Recovery objective active: leave town and follow the south road from the crossroads.
  • Return objective active: you already have the required bag; more searching around the cart is wasted time.

An optional sword may appear in grass near the early route, but it is not required to accept the quest or recover the bag. If it is not immediately visible, stay on the road and follow the objective instead of searching the wider area for a weapon that may not have a fixed spawn.

The left turn and two skeletons prove you are on the right road

Face away from Pichess and continue straight past the settlement’s guardian. At the crossroads, turn left. A lone figure on the rise confirms the turn, but you do not need to interact with that character. Stay on the road as it runs south.

The route presents two skeleton encounters in sequence. The first appears before the deeper cart area; the second confirms that you continued on the same road. In the recorded run they were manageable at the start and dropped basic wearable pieces, but neither difficulty nor loot should be treated as fixed after rapid hotfixes.

  1. Fight where the road gives you space. Do not chase a skeleton into foliage and lose the route you need after the fight.
  2. Check your health before moving to the next one. “The first enemy died” is not evidence that the second exchange will cost the same.
  3. Treat dropped clothing or armor as optional. Equip it only after the immediate threat is resolved; the quest target is at the crates.
  4. Keep heading along the road after the second skeleton. If the path returns to Pichess without a crate area, you doubled back.

The road is the reliable navigation line. Use enemy and crate checkpoints instead of cutting through vegetation.

Take the Goods Bag before treating the cart as cleared

Past the second skeleton, the road reaches the attacked supply area. Several crates and loose items can pull attention away from the objective. Bread and other pickups appeared in the audited run, but the required item was explicitly labeled Goods Bag. Move the crosshair across the containers and ground items until that exact name is visible, then take it.

Do not use “I looted the crates” as the completion test. Use the quest log:

  • If the log still asks you to recover the merchandise, the Goods Bag was not collected.
  • If the log changes to a return step, stop inventory sorting and follow the same road back.
  • If combat music or a second skeleton remains active, clear the immediate danger before reading every optional item.

The bag is the handoff object. Optional food, weapons, or starter clothes cannot substitute for it, and the number of extra items around the cart is not a reliable patch-stable count.

Return by the same route and wait for the key handoff

Turn around at the crates and retrace the road. You should pass the same two encounter positions, reach the crossroads, then see the guardian before Pichess. That reverse sequence is a useful detector: if the guardian appears without the crossroads, you probably took a shortcut, but you are still approaching the correct settlement side; if the coast or Tower dominates the view and no town landmarks return, reopen your bearings before walking farther.

Speak to Pichess with the return objective active. The completion dialogue awards the shack key and describes the home as a one-story building with a stool outside. Confirm the key or the new home-access objective before leaving. If the dialogue repeats the missing-goods problem, reopen the quest inventory and verify that Goods Bag was actually taken rather than merely highlighted.

The stool is ambiguous; use the gate and fortune teller

Several houses around Pichess have a stool, so use this landmark chain instead of checking every stool-front door:

  1. From the quest-completion area, move toward the nearby gate-like opening at the edge of the buildings.
  2. Turn left at that opening.
  3. Use the fortune teller as the next confirmation landmark.
  4. Turn left again and wrap around the building line.
  5. Look for the simple one-story shack with a stool at its door; the newly awarded key should now open it.

The fortune teller is more selective than the stool. If you see stools but never pass that character, you are checking look-alike houses. If you pass the fortune teller and arrive back at Pichess without circling a building, you missed the second left or the wraparound.

Diagnose the exact checkpoint that failed

What you see Most likely missed checkpoint Correction
No quest entry after speaking in town Nuisance was not accepted from Pichess Return to the merchant and finish the quest-start conversation
No skeletons or crates on the road Wrong crossroads branch Return past the guardian, take the left branch, and keep south on the road
Cart area looted but objective unchanged Goods Bag not collected Scan the crate area for the exact item label, then check the quest log
Pichess will not give the key Return state not active Verify the Goods Bag and the quest log before repeating dialogue
Key received but every door looks wrong Stool clue used without landmarks Reset at the gate-like opening, pass the fortune teller, turn left, and go around
Correct-looking shack does not open Wrong door, missing key readback, or changed Early Access state Check inventory/objective, retry the landmark chain once, then compare the current client with the latest official hotfix notes

Watch the audited route when a landmark still does not match

The embedded walkthrough shows the complete Pichess, cart, and shack chain. Use its landmarks for this quest, but treat optional loot commentary as specific to that recorded run.

Wizard Worm’s August 18, 2026 walkthrough shows the same road, cart, return path, and shack landmarks.

If the opening fights feel unexpectedly difficult, check the race and skill-point guide for the starting penalty you may be carrying. Nuisance does not require a specific race, weapon, spell, or perk.

Version check: use the official Steam record to confirm the Early Access state and whether a hotfix newer than Hotfix 4 has changed the quest. The road, cart, return path, and shack landmarks matched the launch-day community guide and the walkthrough above at the recorded check.
