Rancher: A new life Garden Guide: Cucumber Beds and Crop Readbacks

Mature pumpkins in raised garden beds on the Rancher farm

The first cucumber task can stall at three different layers that look like one job: the old beds must be cleared, the tablet must register a seed purchase, and each highlighted soil point must be dug before it can accept a seed. Watering an undug patch or dropping a packet on top of it will not advance crop care.

This starter route is scoped to the retail Early Access build and the developer change log current to the August 21 update, whose captured timestamp is 20:50 UTC. It uses the visible cucumber-bed sequence from episodes 4 and 5 of Einfach Ray’s verified series. It does not claim a permanent crop price, growth timer, yield, or sprinkler radius: saving and planting behavior changed repeatedly during the first two weeks after release.

Make the garden chapter expose one next action

Open the tablet, find the vegetable-garden chapter, and expand it. In the inspected route, the first completed line is clearing every bed; the next visible line asks for cucumber seeds. Pinning the chapter matters because the task list also contains barn, chickens, photos, mushrooms, ATV racing, shooting, fishing, garage repair, and birds. A newly unlocked task can replace the garden tracker even though the cucumbers still need attention.

Use the first unchecked line as a gate:

  • If clearing is unchecked, remove the unwanted growth from all raised beds.
  • If buying seeds is unchecked, purchase the named seed through the tablet shop and let the delivery complete.
  • If the tracker says to care for cucumbers, move to the soil and read individual planting-spot prompts.
  • If the crop is already growing, stop digging and check moisture rather than creating new holes.

This prevents a common waste pattern: buying several vegetable types before the tutorial has confirmed which packet belongs to the active chapter.

Build one verified cucumber spot before filling every bed

The launch-week footage shows a small hoe used on the existing raised beds. A valid digging point gains a blue outline and identifies itself as a digging location. After digging, the spot changes to a planting location and exposes state information such as soil moisture and the planted crop.

  1. Equip the small hoe and face an empty point inside a cleared bed.
  2. Dig only when the blue interaction outline appears.
  3. Confirm that the resulting patch now identifies itself as a planting spot.
  4. Select cucumber seeds and place one in that prepared spot.
  5. Reinspect the spot; it should name the crop rather than remain empty.
  6. Water that one test spot and verify that its moisture readback changes.

Only after those six signals agree should you repeat the pattern. This is faster than planting a whole packet and later discovering that one row was never dug, that the selected item was another seed, or that the watering can was empty.

Treat seed delivery and tool delivery as separate queues

The tablet shop can deliver seeds, hoes, watering tools, and other supplies, but the order arriving does not equip or store itself intelligently for your route. Make a receiving zone near the garden without putting boxes on the raised beds. Check the active packet before planting, and keep tools out of the seed stack so a quick inventory selection cannot swap a hoe for a vegetable packet.

Do not infer how many crops a packet will always support from a launch-week purchase. The footage shows one observed packet and one observed set of beds; Early Access balancing can change price, stack size, and objective count. Buy enough for the current tablet line plus a small replacement margin, then let the readback determine whether another order is needed.

Inventory weight is also part of the route. Multiple full watering cans, tools, seed packets, building materials, and animal feed can share the same inventory. If movement becomes slow or the character cannot pick up a delivery, put non-garden cargo into a nearby container or vehicle rather than scattering it across planting points.

Water by spot state, not by a lap around the beds

A raised bed is not one moisture object. Check the individual planting spot. In the verified footage, the spot panel shows a moisture condition and the crop name; the watering can has its own remaining-water indicator. A splash animation without a changed spot state is not proof that the crop received water.

Use a repeatable pass:

  1. Start at one bed corner and inspect the first cucumber spot.
  2. Water until that spot’s state changes; do not continue pouring after the readback is satisfied.
  3. Move in one direction across the bed, then continue to the next bed.
  4. Refill at the known ranch water source before the can reaches empty.
  5. Make a second inspection pass without watering to catch a missed spot.

Several cans can reduce travel, but they also consume weight and can become hard to distinguish when partly filled. Early in the game, one can plus a predictable refill route is easier to audit. The episode 5 player considers sprinklers, while the August 10 official patch says plant sprinklers were fixed. That confirms sprinklers exist and received a fix; it does not establish an exact coverage shape or prove that every current layout is automatic. Test one unit against the moisture readback before expanding.

Sleep only after creating a saveable crop state

The cucumber objective tells the player to care for the plants until they are grown. Sleeping advances the ranch, but it should not be used as a blind “finish crop” button. Before ending the day, walk the bed once with empty hands and confirm that every intended spot names the correct crop and is not visibly dry.

Then create a clean checkpoint:

  • Finish current planting and watering interactions instead of saving mid-pour.
  • Leave tools and packets in a stable container or staging area.
  • Save, return to the menu if you are testing a suspected bug, and reload once.
  • Check that planting spots, crop names, and moisture state still exist before sleeping.

The purpose is diagnostic. If the garden changes unexpectedly after the night, you can distinguish a missed watering step from a save/load failure.

Read the August fixes before rebuilding a broken bed

Official patches document several garden-specific failures:

  • August 9: plants were fixed to save correctly, including duplicate digging-spot problems.
  • August 10: plant sprinklers were fixed.
  • August 12: plants failing to load on certain older saves were addressed.
  • August 14: removing planting spots could sometimes stop the game from saving; that issue was fixed.
  • August 21: photographs of some vegetables not counting correctly were fixed.

If your current save predates those patches, update and inspect before deleting soil. A duplicated spot, missing plant, or frozen save is not solved reliably by removing every bed. Preserve the state, capture the tablet chapter and spot panel, and test one location on the current build. Removing a planting spot is itself a state-changing action with a documented save-history risk.

Harvest and photography are different completion checks

A grown vegetable can serve more than one system. The garden chapter may want growth or harvest, while the photo chapter evaluates a photograph. Do not assume picking a crop completes a photo task, and do not assume a picture puts the vegetable into inventory.

For a harvest objective, interact with the mature crop and verify the garden line or inventory. For a photo objective, leave one mature plant in place, equip the camera, frame the vegetable clearly, take the photo, and check the photo chapter before harvesting it. Patch 2026-08-21 specifically fixed some vegetable photos not counting, so update before repeating the same shot dozens of times.

The garden run ends at a readable daily loop

The first crop route is complete when you can identify the active garden line, create a valid planting spot, confirm cucumber seed placement, change moisture deliberately, save and reload the bed, and distinguish crop growth from a photo requirement. The available evidence does not justify a universal crop-profit table, exact days-to-harvest chart, permanent sprinkler grid, or claim that planting every available seed is optimal.

Episode 4 below is the independently matched garden episode by Einfach Ray. It shows the cleared beds, tablet purchase, hoe search, planting points, cucumber placement, watering, and the transition toward sleeping. The German automatic transcript was used only alongside visible interactions; current English UI and patch behavior remain authoritative.

When the morning letter unlocks chicken care, switch to the chickens and barn guide; it uses water, feed, sleep, and transport readbacks without repeating the crop route. If the next selected chapter is the house, return to the repair and paint sequence rather than carrying renovation materials through the beds.
