Leaf it Alone Need for Sweep Route: Finish Under 40 Minutes

Leaf it Alone basketball court beside the timed garage door

Need for Sweep is not a fast full cleanup. It is a race to the Secret Room, and the route fails when you spend time on an area that does not unlock the next gate. The reliable plan clears only Porch or Entrance, one garage-access area, Basement, Shed, Pool, Swings, and Greenhouse, then ends the run before 40 minutes.

This is a pre-1.1 guide checked on August 24, 2026. The live branch listed by Eternity is v1.0.16. The official 1.1 devlogs promise an in-game timer, instant restart, and Ranked default-rule Custom runs, but that update is scheduled for October 30, 2026. Do not plan around features that are not yet in the client.

Choose one route before the first bag

Two current community approaches have successful sub-40 evidence, but they spend money and time differently. Mixing them casually is what turns a 36- to 38-minute plan into a 42-minute run.

Branch Area order Tool plan Main risk
Sprint-and-blower Entrance, Court, Basement, Shed, Pool, Greenhouse, Swings, Secret Room Large bag and strong hands, skip rake, buy blower for late zones Reaching the blower and two important vents without wasting the early budget
Bag-and-rake squeeze Porch, Driveway, Basement, Shed, Pool, Swings, Greenhouse, Secret Room Medium then large bag, rake after Basement, blower before Greenhouse Entering the garage without Court sprint

The sprint-and-blower branch is the safer first serious attempt because Court gives a clear movement ability and removes the garage gamble. A tested guide reports 36 minutes with this family of decisions. The bag-and-rake branch has a documented 38:08 route and successful follow-up reports, but the garage entry can consume the entire margin if you repeat it.

Use a fresh run. Ignore photos, basketball items, leaf-pile setup, optional 100% areas, and every Journal objective that does not open the next gate. Need for Sweep appears only after the ending condition; an attractive map percentage is not progress toward the timer.

The current client needs an external pacing signal

Update 1.1 will add a timer, which confirms that the classic branch does not provide the same built-in pacing view. Start a phone timer or LiveSplit when control begins and stop treating it as authoritative after a pause, load, or restart. Steam’s achievement readback at the Secret Room remains the finish proof.

  • Green run: every area unlocks on the first pass, the garage opens in one attempt, and you never return for a forgotten purchase.
  • Recoverable run: one area needs a short last-leaf search, but your next vent or tool is already funded.
  • Reset candidate: two failed garage attempts, a long early detour, or reaching Pool without money for the chosen inlet/tool plan.

Do not reset because one upgrade purchase was imperfect. The tested routes have several minutes of variation. Reset when the route’s dependency is broken: no access, no required tool budget, or no plausible way to finish the current area quickly.

Sprint-and-blower route: remove garage variance

This branch invests in a leaf-value clear and Court sprint, then pays for late-game throughput. It deliberately skips Porch bag tying unless your hand collection is unstable. Entrance is the value-reward area; the developer has confirmed the three value rewards are Entrance, Basement, and Pool.

Entrance and Court: earn, upgrade, then sprint

  1. Open the free inlet beside the Porch for immediate seed money, but do not clean Porch.
  2. Clear Entrance completely. Keep leaves inside its highlighted boundary and use the nearby bin.
  3. Buy the medium and large bags as income allows. Capacity cuts far more travel than a scattered set of early tool upgrades.
  4. Prioritize Greedy Grasp and pickup speed while finishing Entrance and Court.
  5. Clear Court 100% and require the sprint reward.
  6. At the shed button, hold until the monitor shows the garage door fully raised. Release, turn once, sprint-jump straight through.

The Court costs an area clear, but it changes a pixel-tight doorway into a repeatable gate. If the run loses time here, examine the door state. Leaving before full height is a button error; curving around the shed is a path error; hitting the frame is an aim error.

Basement and Shed: keep the route continuous

Move through the garage rear door and descend to Basement. Clear from the back shelves toward the stairs. When the Basement value reward appears, continue: the Shed access gate needs 100%, not the partial reward.

Exit toward the shed as soon as Basement confirms complete. Clear the roof and yard without returning to optional front zones. Hand collection is still viable here if Greedy Grasp and Dexterity are strong. The no-rake route saves the purchase and avoids learning a second tool mid-run.

Before leaving Shed, require enough money for the Pool inlet and a path toward the blower. One tested route reserves $15 for Pool and roughly $25 for the Greenhouse inlet. Verify actual live prices at the inlet prompt; do not spend down to zero because an old guide printed a number.

Pool: buy removal capacity before luxury upgrades

Open the Pool inlet first. With the blower, stand at the perimeter and push edge leaves inward, then direct the collected lane into the inlet. Width prevents repeated narrow passes; power moves the dense pool carpet; air-spread control helps stop leaves from escaping sideways. Buy for the failure you can see rather than maxing one column by habit.

  1. Strip leaves from the loungers, outer wall, and rim toward the basin.
  2. Convert the basin into two or three broad lanes.
  3. Feed one lane fully before starting the next.
  4. Use hands under furniture and on isolated rim leaves.
  5. At 100%, enter the hedge route immediately; do not clean Grill or Maze.

Greenhouse, Swings, and the finish

Greenhouse supplies the Secret Room key. Swings supplies crouch. The order is flexible once Pool opens the back route, but clearing them separately is less confusing than blowing a mixed border and wondering which percentage moved.

If the blower is strong, finish Greenhouse first. Work the beds and glass edges toward the inlet, then hand-pick under benches. Run to Swings, repair its inlet only if the budget already supports it, and clear from the outer fence toward the center. Return through the garage side to Basement, crouch into the rear vent, and trigger the ending.

Do not stop for Greenhouse or Swings collectibles. Do not clean Maze. Do not chase Leaf No Leaf Behind. The timer route ends when the Secret Room sequence starts and Need for Sweep reads back.

Bag-and-rake squeeze: save Court but rehearse the door

The June 2026 38:08 route replaces Entrance and Court with Porch and Driveway. Porch gives bag tying; Driveway gives a movement reward. You then enter the garage without sprint. This branch saves an entire Court clear but moves the run’s risk into one physical execution.

Porch: buy the hand engine, not every cheap icon

Use the free inlet, then collect and sell small loads only until Greedy Grasp, Dexterity, Fluid Picker, and the medium bag support continuous hand sweeping. Finish Porch and require bag tying. From that point, throw full tied bags toward the next bin instead of walking each one.

The tested route uses the Porch to establish capacity, then Driveway to buy the large bag. Its detailed purchase rhythm is a model, not a mandatory shopping list: upgrade whenever a completed bag funds the next clear improvement, but preserve the large-bag goal before leaving Driveway.

Driveway: finish toward the garage

Start near the garage and work outward so the last pass returns you to the shed. Throw tied bags toward the front bin. When Driveway reaches 100%, read the movement reward, buy the large bag, and set up the garage test.

  1. Stand as close to the button as possible while still facing the exit line.
  2. Raise the garage door to its hard upper stop.
  3. Release and stay to the right on the approach.
  4. Jump without oversteering and pass the threshold before the lower edge reaches you.

If you have not rehearsed this entry, the saved Court time is theoretical. A built-in save can protect practice, but do not import the supplied third-party achievement save. That source bypasses play, introduces an unverified external file, and teaches nothing about the route.

Rake timing: Basement, Shed, then Pool

Clear Basement with the upgraded hands and large bag. Buy the rake after Basement, when its area scale starts paying back the tool switch. In Shed, throw bags onto the roof or over the fence only when the line is familiar; a missed long throw costs more than a short run.

At Pool, buy the inlet before spending the reserve. Improve sweep radius, handle length, and stickiness in response to the live rake: radius catches a wider carpet, length reaches awkward edges, and stickiness keeps the pile attached. Rake the perimeter into the basin, then feed controlled fractions into the inlet. The route does not need a perfectly upgraded rake; it needs Pool 100% without scattered leftovers.

Swings before Greenhouse creates the blower budget

The tested rake route clears Swings next, using its inlet and maxing useful rake reach/stickiness when funds allow. That clear should leave enough money to buy the blower. Run back through the garage to the shed, purchase it, then return to Greenhouse for the final wide-area clear.

At Greenhouse, use the rake to free leaves from edges and the blower to move the bulk. Buy blower width, spread control, and power only as the next income arrives. When Greenhouse reaches 100%, go straight to Basement; both the key and crouch are now owned.

The ten vent turns are the final execution check

A verified current English route records the basement duct as right, down, right, right, left, left, right, left, left, down. Use the pattern to avoid stopping at every junction, but keep the camera aligned before each drop. A fall that rotates the view can make the next remembered direction wrong relative to the screen.

If the opening rejects you, crouch is missing or not active. If the crawl ends at a wall, return to the last junction rather than restarting the run. If you reach the laboratory but Steam does not award Need for Sweep, check the Summary/leaderboard time and confirm this was a new default-rule run, not continued post-ending cleanup.

Protect the last five minutes from small losses

  • One leaf under a bench: switch to hands immediately; repeated blower passes are slower and can push it deeper.
  • Wrong-color leaves: press the area-highlight control and ignore leaves that belong to Grill, Maze, or another border.
  • No money for an inlet: sell the bags already on the route; do not detour into an optional area to fund a convenience purchase.
  • Pool at 99.9%: inspect rim, loungers, basin corners, and the inlet edge in that order.
  • Greenhouse at 99.9%: rake under benches and steps, then reload only if the highlighted area stays stuck.
  • Achievement pressure: skip every photo and skill shot. They remain available on a normal completion save.

The broader story walkthrough explains every gate and last-leaf recovery without a timer. Use it to learn the map, then start a separate Need for Sweep run. The $700 route deliberately delays sales and is a poor speedrun hybrid.

Finish-state audit for Need for Sweep

A valid finish has the Secret Room cutscene, a Summary time below 40 minutes, and the Steam achievement. It does not require all thirteen areas, all upgrades, all photos, every objective, or a clean map. Current global Steam data makes Need for Sweep the least-unlocked of the original 18 achievements; that describes completion frequency, not a guaranteed difficulty rating.

Leaf it Alone on Steam is the official AppID 3981100 record. Eternity’s announcements supply the v1.0.16 live boundary and the future 1.1 timer/Ranked changes. The two route branches above come from separately readable, tested English guides; no third-party save, community image, or claimed permanent split time is used.
