When the gold column appears, do not dodge The Judgment’s hand; dodge the lane the committed column will occupy. The bright control phase is a warning, not the damaging hit. Your job is to keep a second exit until the commitment, then decide whether Heresy should be cleansed now, carried for a few seconds, or managed while a teammate is trapped in Exile.
Chorus of Sin released on August 25, 2026. Check this launch-version matchup advice against Behaviour’s installed Power Showcase, match-details text, current HUD states, and perk descriptions after future patches.
Name your state before choosing an action
The matchup becomes confusing when every visual is treated as one emergency. Use four states instead:
- Clean survivor: preserve flexible pathing and avoid giving Divine Light a locked animation.
- Heretic: expect punitive generator Skill Checks and understand that a down can become Exile.
- Exiled survivor: protect the sacrifice timer, collect Exiled Souls with the Searcher’s Pendant, and trust the outside team to activate the return.
- Outside rescuer: identify an active Shrine, wait for a safe route, and avoid pulling every teammate off generators.
The correct action can reverse when the state changes. Running toward a Shrine is sensible for a safe Heretic with time; it is wasteful if someone has just entered Exile and your teammate is already closer to the active rescue point.
Dodge the commitment, not the harmless preview
The Judgment first steers a visible column away from their position. That steering phase does no damage. The attack input commits the column, and the damaging strike follows after a short delay. A panicked early sidestep tells the Killer which lane to occupy next. A very late sidestep loses to the committed strike.
Build your route around a covered fork: a point where hard cover separates two exits. Approach it without locking yourself into a vault or narrow doorway. When the preview claims one side, keep the other side available. Once the Killer commits, cross behind solid cover or take the unclaimed continuation. The goal is not a theatrical double-back; it is to make the column and The Judgment’s body defend different spaces.
Three routes are especially dangerous:
- A single window approached in a straight line. The landing side becomes an obvious column target. Leave the approach early or force the Killer to place the preview before you vault.
- A pallet with only one useful continuation. Dropping the pallet locks the animation while Divine Light covers the route beyond it. Decide whether to pre-drop and leave or skip the pallet entirely.
- A generator, Shrine, heal, or rescue with no side cover. These interactions supply the commitment point. Release the interaction as soon as the preview removes your safe exit; progress is cheaper than a health state plus Heresy.
If a cast misses, do not immediately return to the route the column just divided. The Killer still has normal movement and may have used the cast to force that predictable correction.
Treat Heresy as a clock, not a panic button
Divine Light applies Heresy when it hits. Taunting can also create it, including prolonged end-gate behavior under the release rules. Heretics receive special generator Skill Checks where an ordinary Good result can remove progress. A Great result is therefore not a bonus objective; it is the safer repair outcome while marked.
Shrines of Judgment let a Heretic Repent and drain the affliction over time. The release-day wiki snapshot describes a long interaction rather than an instant cleanse, so choose the attempt by opportunity cost:
- Repent now when the Killer is committed elsewhere, your generator is not close to completion, and being Exiled would force a difficult rescue.
- Delay repentance when an almost-finished generator or urgent teammate rescue is worth more than beginning a vulnerable Shrine channel.
- Break off when terror cues, an aura, or the Divine Light preview removes your escape lane. Partial cleansing is not worth handing over a free hit.
Use the current HUD to confirm whether Heresy is actually draining and whether interruption preserves any progress. Public launch references disagree on some fine timings; a live state icon is better evidence than memory.
Inside Exile, protect time before chasing every Soul
Exile advances hook state and uses the sacrifice timer. Seeds of Punishment reduce that remaining time when they hit. Move for survival first. A nearby Exiled Soul is valuable only if the route to it does not expose you to another Seed.
The Searcher’s Pendant points toward and collects Exiled Souls. The test-build rules allow a limited set to extend the default protections you receive after liberation. That extension matters only if you return with enough hook time left to use it. A simple inside loop is safer:
- Read the nearest Seed path before raising the Pendant.
- Collect a Soul that lies on a safe continuation, not one that requires crossing a hazard.
- Recheck the sacrifice timer after every hit or collection.
- When the timer becomes the limiting resource, stop shopping for extra protection and preserve the route.
The public 10.1.0 notes also state that Souls stop adding protection once all generators are powered. In that endgame state, survival time and a quick outside rescue take priority over collection. Recheck the live Pendant prompt after any patch.
Outside Exile, one rescuer is usually enough
When The Judgment sends someone to Exile, the two closest Shrines to the Killer activate for liberation. Active rescue Shrines are a different job from ordinary repentance. First identify which Shrine is active, then compare route safety and teammate positions. If another survivor is clearly closer, stay on your objective unless their chase state makes the route impossible.
A clean solo-queue rescue protocol needs no voice chat:
- Watch portraits and the active Shrine cue before leaving your generator.
- Approach from cover rather than along the most direct exposed line.
- If the Killer is still nearby, wait for a chase commitment instead of starting the interaction on sight.
- Liberate once; do not stack several healthy survivors at the same Shrine.
- After the return, split paths so an empowered Divine Light cannot cover both players.
The Judgment receives a Zealous power window after Exile. Expect the next Divine Light to be more dangerous. A rescue that ends with both survivors running through the same doorway gives that enhanced cast exactly the lane it wants.
Repentance and liberation compete for attention
A marked survivor may want to cleanse at the same moment an Exiled teammate needs an active Shrine. Keep the jobs separate. Liberation has a sacrifice timer; repentance manages a future risk. Unless the Heretic is already being chased into an immediate down, the timed rescue normally wins.
After the teammate returns, reassess rather than resuming the old plan automatically. If The Judgment has left, one survivor can Repent while another repairs. If the Killer is rotating back with Zealous, both should leave the obvious Shrine lane and create distance before interacting again.
Endgame punishes taunting more than usual
Chorus of Sin makes exit-area delay an actual power interaction. Public launch descriptions allow Heresy to be gained through taunting, and the release-day mechanics snapshot includes lingering near the gate among those triggers. Heresy acquired close to an exit can also produce a temporary gate restriction in that snapshot.
The reliable endgame rule is simple: heal or rescue for a named reason, then leave. Do not crouch, gesture, or stand inside the threshold merely to watch the Killer. If you must body-block for a teammate, choose an exit-side piece of hard cover and preserve a second lane; an aligned group is an easy Divine Light target.
Turn each lost chase into one route correction
| Failure | Likely cause | Next-trial correction |
|---|---|---|
| Hit during a vault | The landing lane was obvious before commitment | Leave the approach earlier or hold a covered alternative |
| Hit after an early dodge | The preview learned your second route | Delay the final choice until the attack commits |
| Downed while Repenting | The interaction had no safe break point | Start only after confirming Killer commitment elsewhere |
| Two survivors hit after liberation | Both exited through the same lane during Zealous | Preassign opposite continuations around the Shrine |
| Died while collecting Souls | Protection value outranked remaining sacrifice time | Collect only along safe paths and stop when the timer becomes critical |
Change one behavior per trial. If you alter your entire loadout, Shrine route, dodge timing, and camera at once, a good result cannot tell you what improved.
Use the Killer plan to predict the commitment
The counterplay is independent, but understanding the other role helps you identify the commitment point. The companion The Judgment Killer guide explains lane selection, Heresy conversion, Exile choice, and Zealous routing from the Killer’s inputs. Use it to predict the plan, then return to the survivor states here.
The August 25 DLC identity, character roles, power outline, and official screenshot were checked against the official Steam Chorus of Sin page and Behaviour’s The Judgment profile. Exile, Shrine, Pendant, and control details were cross-checked with Behaviour’s PTB documentation for version 10.1.0 plus the wiki revision saved August 25. Later installed descriptions take priority over any launch snapshot.
A successful counter sequence has four readbacks: the preview claimed one lane, you kept another; Heresy did not force a reckless cleanse; the Exiled player protected the timer; and only one outside survivor paid the rescue cost. Escape is useful, but those four decisions are the proof that the matchup is becoming readable.
