The story only advances when a boss trigger, a distinct quest trophy, and the correct NPC hand-in happen in that order. A kill by itself is not enough. If the Radar still shows no new destination, stop shopping and inspect what you carried back; ordinary meat and the progression trophy can come from the same creature, but only one completes the request.
This route was checked against the Windows release and official announcements available on August 26, 2026, with Patch 1.0.9 as the current boundary. Patch 1.0.5 removed travel to islands that had not been unlocked, so old advice about sailing straight to the Volcano is no longer a valid story route. Patch 1.0.9 also added difficulty selection. Use the setting that matches the run you want, then let the live quest text and inventory labels override any community nickname below.

Carry a three-part proof before leaving any island
Every main stop has the same underlying transaction even though the creatures and NPC requests change:
- Trigger proof: the quest giver has accepted the requested item and supplied the special bait, lure, or next instruction.
- Fight proof: the intended boss appeared from that trigger and was defeated, not merely an optional creature from a purchasable Boss Lure.
- Hand-in proof: the unusual shell, skeleton, fin, head, tail, or whole body reached the NPC and produced a route, key, or quest-state change.
Do not sell, cook, eat, gamble, or leave a distinctive boss drop on the boat until the final readback occurs. In co-op, name one player as the trophy carrier before casting. After the interaction, open the Radar or test the awarded key; that is stronger evidence than assuming the quest completed because dialogue ended.
Lighthouse: turn the beer quest into Boat Keys
Use the first catches to learn the rod, kill-and-sell loop, and hunger pressure. Buy only enough combat power to make the Spider Crab safe; a sharpened early melee weapon is sufficient if you wait for openings. The mandatory sequence is:
- Speak to the Lighthouse Keeper and follow the beer request.
- Give him a full Beer. Keep the Empty Beer Can returned by the interaction.
- Equip that empty can as bait on the Crab Fishing Rod and cast to summon the Spider Crab.
- Let the crab commit to its attack, move clear, then punish the short vulnerable or stunned state rather than trading hits.
- Pick up the distinct Spider Crab Shell and return it to the keeper.
- Confirm the Boat Keys work before loading loose valuables into the boat.
A normal Beer Can is not the boss bait, and killing ordinary crabs cannot skip the keeper’s exchange. If the Spider Crab will not appear, check the equipped bait name. If the keeper refuses the post-fight item, inspect every piece from the kill and offer the shell rather than generic meat.
Forest: find three Leeches before investing in damage
The Forest quest is an item search followed by the Giant Piranha fight. Talk to the woman near the lake first, then search the paths, the sides of her house, and the grass immediately around the route for three Leeches. Tall vegetation can hide the models, so move slowly and watch for the pickup prompt. Return all three to receive the modified Leech bait.
Buy the normal Fishing Rod and a controllable ranged weapon before using that bait. The Giant Piranha produces smaller piranhas during the fight. Carry edible catches, keep moving in a broad circle, and clear only the minions that block your route or threaten a reload. The goal is to avoid turning a short boss fight into a long hunger-and-ammunition drain.
After the kill, preserve the visually distinct skeleton or trophy piece and take it back to the woman. The useful checkpoint is the next island’s coordinates appearing, not the death animation. The purchasable Beginner Boss Lure summons optional collection targets and does not replace this modified quest bait.
Desert: separate the grill side route from the Tourist route
The Desert contains two useful chains, but only one unlocks the next island.
- Optional Grillmaster chain: use the Standard Boss Lure for the Blue Shark requested by the grill NPC. Completing this opens the grill and supports cooking, money, and achievement cleanup. It is useful on a normal save but can be skipped on a timed Bean attempt.
- Required Tourist chain: speak to the Tourist under the tree, then catch a creature that the current UI marks as endangered with a Standard Lure. Multiple readable guides use Needlefish as the dependable example. Give the valid creature to the Tourist and keep the Carrot he returns.
Equip the Carrot to summon the Pufferfish. The boss grows more dangerous as the encounter develops, so prepare a ranged weapon, food, and open inventory before casting. Afterward, pick up the distinct fin or trophy rather than ordinary chunks and return it to the Tourist. Because references use several informal names for the drop, judge it by its shape and the NPC’s response, not by one guide’s noun.
If you have killed a Pufferfish but still cannot see the Rocks route, verify all three state changes: the Tourist accepted an endangered catch, supplied the Carrot, and accepted the boss trophy.
Rocks: the Tuna is bait, not the end of the quest
The Island 4 chain contains a deliberate handoff between two creatures:
- Talk to the local NPC about the terrorizing bird.
- Buy a Professional Boss Lure, cast it, and defeat the Tuna mini-boss.
- Do not sell or cook the Tuna. Place its body on open ground where the incoming bird can reach it.
- Wait for the Albatross, the creature tied to the Terrorizing bird achievement, to descend for the Tuna.
- Fight from a repeatable piece of cover instead of chasing it around the whole island.
- Collect the bird’s distinct head or trophy, hand it to the NPC, and confirm the Volcano or military route appears.
If an ordinary seagull steals the Tuna, reacquire the Professional Boss Lure and reset the placement rather than assuming the story is broken. If the Albatross dies but the route remains locked, the missing step is usually the trophy hand-in.
Volcano: preserve the Whale body for the final transformation
Speak to the Scientist before farming. Readable references agree that the first request is for five fish, but they disagree on whether previously caught fish always count. The conservative route is to catch five fresh creatures at the Volcano with the Scientific Lure and watch the quest counter or dialogue after each hand-in. This avoids losing time to an inventory full of items the current build rejects.
The Scientist supplies the Fish Bucket. Use it as the special bait for the Bowhead Whale, defeat that Whale, and keep the whole body. It is not ordinary sale stock: carry it to the Volcano and throw it into the crater to trigger the Mutated Bowhead Whale encounter.
Before that throw, consolidate the run:
- put upgrades into one ranged weapon you already control;
- fill spare inventory slots with food rather than unsold clutter;
- save through the game’s own Save, Main Menu, or Quit controls;
- clear loose objects away from the arena path so the Whale body is easy to move;
- decide whether you also want the Handyman final-punch condition before the health bar appears.
Defeat the Mutated Bowhead Whale, secure its distinct final quest drop, and return it to the Scientist. The resulting keys are for the final military boat or RHIB. Start that boat and travel toward the mainland; the boss death alone is not the ending. The We are so back achievement should follow the completed escape and credits sequence.
Use the Radar as a quest readback, not a route exploit
The Radar helps identify the next unlocked destination, but it does not replace the hand-in that unlocks it. If a destination is absent, work backward through the island’s proof chain. If it is present but the boat cannot travel, verify the relevant key and make sure the boat is not physically grounded or missing after a reload.
Patch 1.0.6 changed saving so the game also saves when the player uses Save, Main Menu, or Quit, alongside periodic autosaves. Patch 1.0.9 attempted another save-corruption fix. That history is a reason to use the in-game save controls at clean checkpoints; it is not evidence that every damaged save is repaired. Do not edit save fields to manufacture an island unlock, and do not follow pre-1.0.5 advice that bypasses the intended order.
Choose the next route for your remaining goal
For attack tells, positioning, difficulty choices, co-op roles, and final-arena resets, use the How to Fish boss guide. If an encyclopedia gap blocks Collector or Fishipedia, switch to the lure-pool and collection cleanup guide. For all 28 Steam achievements, including the current no-shortcut Bean route, use the achievement roadmap.
Check the island order against the current patch
The official Steam page documents AppID 4001890, Dazed Games, the August 20, 2026 Windows release, the fishing, combat, and selling loop, island progression, bosses, rare variants, trick shots, gambling, and the official image above. Check difficulty settings, the Patch 1.0.5 locked-island fix, and Patch 1.0.6 save behavior against the official announcement feed through Patch 1.0.9. Use live readbacks when community routes disagree on prices, trophy nicknames, or the five-fish eligibility rule.
