For Collector cleanup, group missing creatures by lure pool instead of sweeping all five shorelines. Later islands unlock new lure tiers, but the equipped lure is the main selector for ordinary catches. At least one early guide incorrectly treated every fish as permanently region-locked and was later corrected.
Use the Tab encyclopedia as the authority for names and completion. Choose the next rod, lure, or special trigger from the tables here, then confirm the result in the current client. The material was checked on August 26, 2026, after Patch 1.0.9. No official spawn rate, guaranteed Drip rate, or permanent lure price is assumed.

Turn the encyclopedia into a lure queue
- Open Tab and write down only the empty normal entries. Keep Drip gaps in a second list.
- Match each missing name to the ordinary lure table or the special-trigger table below.
- Work one pool until its normal entries are filled. Switching lure after every catch makes duplicate diagnosis harder.
- Kill the creature and reopen Tab. A catch on the hook or a body on the ground is not the same as a recorded encyclopedia kill.
- Once Collector is complete, repeat only the unresolved pools for their Drip variants.
The captured community databases contain 44 cross-referenced rows but explicitly stop short of calling 44 a final in-game total. They also disagree on a few display names and early-pool overlaps. If Tab shows an extra row or different spelling, the client wins. Record the live name, then test the closest lure pool rather than inventing a new island rule.
Early rods have the messy overlaps
| Rod and bait | Cross-checked ordinary pool | What to verify in the client |
|---|---|---|
| Crab Fishing Rod + Free Lure / Ham | Shrimp and an early crab entry | Sources alternate between Brown Crab and Rock Crab naming; use the Tab label and kill readback. |
| Crab Fishing Rod + Hot Dog | Rock Crab, Lobster; some current tables also place ordinary Piranha in this pool | If the Piranha slot stays empty, test Hot Dog on the Forest before spending more Beginner Lures. |
| Fishing Rod + Free Lure / French Fry | Mackerel, Gar, Pike; Goldfish appears here in some tables | Confirm that the normal Fishing Rod, not the Crab Fishing Rod, is equipped. |
| Fishing Rod + Beginner Lure | Cod, Pike, Goldfish, Perch, Triggerfish and Piranha | One Steam table spells a name “Golby,” while another uses Goby; Salmon and Sunfish placement also conflicts. Follow the live encyclopedia spelling. |
These overlaps explain why a missing early creature can survive a seemingly thorough island sweep. Change one variable: keep the lure but swap the rod, or keep the rod and swap Free/Hot Dog/Beginner. Reopen Tab after a kill. Do not diagnose the entire collection from what merely bit the line.
Standard, Professional, and Scientific pools are cleaner
From the Desert onward, the captured sources converge on one main regular tier per progression stage:
| Lure | Cross-referenced ordinary catches | Earliest natural access |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Lure | Angelfish, Yellow Boxfish / Boxfish, Bowlfish, Catfish, Sea Urchin, Seahorse, Clownfish, Bluegill, Salmon, Needlefish | Desert / Island 3 |
| Professional Lure | Parrotfish, Voxelfish / Voxel Fish, Bass, Halibut, Eel, Tigerfish, Flying Fish, Sengarat, Red Snapper, Dripper | Rocks / Island 4 |
| Scientific Lure | Anglerfish, Blobfish, Oarfish, Superdwarf Fish, Stonefish | Volcano / Island 5 |
“Earliest natural access” is not the same as “hard region lock.” It tells you where progression introduces the lure and where a first playthrough can efficiently combine quests with collection work. Once the islands are open, a controlled pool test is better: equip the lure, make several casts at a safe shore, and check whether the expected names register. If they do, stay there instead of adding boat travel to every attempt.
Boss Lures and story bait solve different gaps
| Missing creature | Required lure or physical trigger | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Spider Crab | Empty Beer Can from Lighthouse Keeper | Story boss |
| Giant Piranha | Modified Leech from the three-Leech Forest quest | Story boss |
| The Old Pike | Beginner Boss Lure | Optional mini-boss |
| Sunfish | Beginner Boss Lure in current community tables | Optional mini-boss; confirm the live encyclopedia row |
| Blue Shark | Standard Boss Lure | Optional mini-boss and Grillmaster request |
| Pufferfish | Carrot from the Tourist’s endangered-creature exchange | Story boss |
| Tuna | Professional Boss Lure | Mini-boss and physical bait for Albatross |
| Albatross / Terrorizing Bird | Defeated Tuna placed on the ground | Story encounter |
| Goblin Shark | Scientific Boss Lure | Optional late mini-boss |
| Bowhead Whale | Fish Bucket from the Scientist | Story boss and physical final trigger |
| Mutated Bowhead Whale | Bowhead Whale body thrown into the Volcano | Final story boss |
Purchased Boss Lures can be consumed or lost on use, while the story triggers come from NPC chains. Before spending a high-tier Boss Lure, empty enough inventory to secure the result and confirm the target remains missing in Tab. Do not use a second lure to solve a missing hand-in; if the creature is already recorded but progression is stuck, return the distinct trophy to the NPC.
When nothing bites, isolate input, rod, and pool
A correct lure that produces no bite is not immediate proof of a bad table. Test the interaction in this order:
- Confirm the hook is in water and hold the reel input (left click on the documented keyboard setup) long enough to start the current fishing interaction.
- Inspect the equipped rod. Early Crab Fishing Rod bait and ordinary Fishing Rod lure pools are not interchangeable.
- Read the lure name after any NPC exchange. Empty Beer Can, Modified Leech, Carrot, and Fish Bucket are special triggers, not cosmetic descriptions of shop lures.
- Move to a clear shore and recast once. Physics or a grounded line can mimic a bad bait selection.
- In co-op, have the host test one cast alone. If the host works and a guest does not, record that as session state instead of rewriting the pool.
Change one field per attempt. Swapping island, rod, lure, host, and casting position simultaneously may produce a fish but will not reveal what fixed the problem.
Fishipedia is a second pass through the same pools
The Steam achievement descriptions distinguish the two collection goals: Collector asks for all creatures, while Fishipedia asks for all Drip creatures. Drips are visually unusual variants with a rainbow-style name. Current cross-checked guides place them in the normal creature’s lure route rather than behind a secret Drip lure.
Use this cleanup loop:
- Filter your written list to one missing Drip name.
- Equip the normal lure for that creature’s pool.
- Cast and begin reeling slowly enough to see the creature notification.
- If the candidate is ordinary, use the cancel or release input documented by current Steam guides and continue the pool when the game permits it.
- When the rainbow name appears, stop cancelling, land it, kill it, and confirm the Drip slot in Tab.
The cancel method reduces full recasts, but habit becomes a risk: releasing before reading the name can discard the exact variant you need. Slow down as soon as any unusual name styling appears. No reliable public evidence supports a fixed Drip percentage across all builds, so plan by missing pools and observed attempts rather than a promised number of casts.
Gambling a Drip does not replace the kill readback
The Reel of Fortune accepts Drip creatures and awards cosmetic skins. The encyclopedia record should be established by the kill before the creature is spent. Check Tab first, then gamble only a variant that is already recorded. Current references say Drips respawn and the cosmetic action does not erase the encyclopedia entry, but a UI readback is still safer than assuming the body alone counted.
The GOLD GOLD GOLD achievement depends on receiving a legendary skin, not merely inserting one Drip. Because the result is random and no official rate is published, collect replaceable variants and stop calling any fixed number of attempts an expectation.
Close the last gap with a two-column log
For the final few entries, record attempted setup and Tab result. A useful row looks like “Fishing Rod + Professional Lure, safe Volcano shore, Red Snapper killed, normal slot filled, Drip still empty.” A useless row says “fished Island 5 for a while.” The first tells you to remain in the Professional pool; the second leaves rod, lure, kill state, and variant unknown.
If the missing name is a story or mini-boss, use the special table and protect the trigger. If it is an ordinary fish whose spelling differs among sources, search Tab by its live name and test the adjacent disputed pools. If Tab contains a creature absent from every captured list, preserve a screenshot and current version instead of assigning it a lure by analogy.
For the story steps that unlock each lure tier, use the five-island progression walkthrough. For Collector, Fishipedia, GOLD GOLD GOLD, and the other 25 unlocks in a safe order, continue with the achievement roadmap.
Check disputed lure pools in Tab
The official Steam listing documents the collection loop, rare variants, trick shots, gambling, boss-gated islands, and the official fishing image above. The public Steam achievement page gives the exact Collector and Fishipedia requirements. Two detailed Steam Community tables, current fish databases, and verified walkthrough references disagree on early crab names, Goby/Golby spelling, Salmon or Sunfish placement, and island lock versus lure control. Resolve those differences with the current Tab readback.
