Do the clean five-day Campaign before you touch the all-admit or all-call endings. That first file teaches the inspection loop, gives you the safest shot at BETTER THAN HENRY and EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH, and starts the slow counters for captures, matches, and Wanted Posters. Deliberate failure routes are much faster once you know which clue actually proves a doppelganger.
This route covers the current Steam release, AppID 3431040, and its 18 Steam achievements. It does not combine the old itch.io achievement screen with the Steam list. Several pre-Steam Nightmare guides describe a different eight-achievement page and an Evil Chester set; those are useful historical references, but they are not the checklist used here.
Freeze the first clean Campaign as your reference run
Finish the tutorial first for TRAINED EMPLOYEE, then start a new Campaign and treat every visitor as if the no-death ending depends on the decision. It does. The early days have the shorter applicant lists and are therefore the right place to slow down, learn the files, and secure an S rank before the desk becomes crowded. Retained community guides disagree on the exact Day 1 headcount, so use the in-game list rather than a fixed number from a captured run.
Use this order for the whole achievement route:
- Clean Campaign: admit every real neighbor, remove or reject every proven doppelganger, complete Chester’s five questions, and defeat the Clown. Aim for S on Day 1 or Day 2 and preserve every resident for EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH.
- Four controlled Campaign failures: run the all-admit, all-call, Afton-only, and limited-casualty conditions separately. There is no useful reason to contaminate the clean file first.
- Arcade: earn OVERTIME with accurate, faster inspections after the dossier has become familiar.
- Nightmare: get one survival clear and handle the Mask Ghost only after the normal desk routine is automatic.
- Custom and cumulative cleanup: add one tenant, then finish HUNTER, QUARANTINE, and the 32 Wanted Posters that did not arrive naturally.
Two encounter achievements fit inside the clean run without harming it. On an obvious fake, deny entry instead of pressing the red button; if it reveals itself, GOT YOU! registers and you can resolve the exposed threat. For UNLIKELY, play the Clown’s card encounter rather than using the skip added in Patch 2.0.2. Losing does not justify abandoning the entire route: after the Campaign has been completed, Card Mode provides a separate practice path. WORK ACCIDENT specifically requires removing a real neighbor, so leave it for CONSPIRATOR or the all-call ending instead of ruining the perfect file.
Audit a visitor in six passes before touching the red button
The daily list is a routing clue, not an identity certificate. A listed visitor can still be a doppelganger, and an unlisted applicant can still be the real resident. Keep the same left-to-right audit on every person so a dramatic face does not distract you from an ordinary number error.
- Roster state: mark whether the name appears on today’s list, but do not decide yet. An absent name triggers a phone check; it is not an automatic D.D.D. call.
- Face against the building file: compare the person at the window with the large reference portrait, not only with the photos they handed you. Check eye color, mole side, scars, hair shape, nose, mouth, chin, ears, and facial hair. The Sverchzt twins are a useful discipline test because their moles and hair swirls point to opposite sides.
- ID against the file: verify the full name, identification number, portrait, D.D.D. mark, and date. A forged portrait can be made to match the face at the window, which is why the building file remains the controlling comparison.
- Entry Request against both records: check name, apartment, portrait, approval stamp, and any occupation shown. Missing optional job text is not itself proof; a wrong apartment or name is.
- Phone and questioning: call the apartment, then question the specific discrepancy. A roommate saying that a document was left at home contradicts an applicant who is holding that same document. A resident answering from inside contradicts the copy standing at your window.
- Checklist and action: fill the checklist from the evidence you actually saw. Admit only when every conflict is resolved; call D.D.D. or deny when a durable contradiction proves the fake.

Two Steam-era rule changes prevent common false arrests. First, a missing hat is not an anomaly. Patch 2.0.2 explicitly removed the old hat check, so a legacy guide that tells you to verify every hat is describing the earlier build. Second, Patch 2.0.3 clarified how a genuinely forgotten document behaves: if the visitor says it was left at home, that document is treated as valid. A wrong ID number or other document error will instead leave the paper available when you question it. The missing paper clears only that paper; the applicant can still fail the portrait, list, phone, or other document checks.
The phone is strongest when it creates a contradiction. If the supposed resident answers from the apartment, the person at the window cannot be that resident. If a roommate confirms that a paper is inside while the applicant displays it, the copy has exposed itself. No answer is weaker: it can mean nobody is home, so continue through the documents and face rather than treating silence as a death sentence.
If you admit someone and immediately suspect the decision, call the apartment. A real arrival should be able to change the apartment state; continued silence is a warning that deserves extra scrutiny when the next applicant from that unit appears. In a clean ending attempt, restarting the current day is safer than improvising after a confirmed doppelganger has entered. If you continue, deny later arrivals to the compromised apartment so you do not feed additional residents into it.
Turn Days 1 and 2 into S-rank drills
BETTER THAN HENRY is a daily performance check, while EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH judges the Campaign ending. That means you can secure the S early and still protect the longer no-death route. On Day 1 or Day 2, complete every checklist accurately, keep every doppelganger out, and make the correct admit, deny, or D.D.D. decision for every visitor. Do not chase speed until this is repeatable.
Use failures diagnostically:
- A document field was wrong: place ID, request, and building file side by side on the next attempt. Do not compare from memory while papers overlap.
- A face looked correct on both supplied papers: return to the building portrait. A doppelganger can align its own face and forged photos while still disagreeing with the resident file.
- The applicant was not listed: call before escalating. Today’s list says who is expected, not who is biologically real.
- A hat changed: ignore it. This is an official post-2.0.2 rule, not an edge case.
- The result is still ambiguous: ask about the exact missing or inconsistent item. Random D.D.D. calls destroy the perfect ending faster than a slow desk does.
On the clean Campaign, prefer D.D.D. for a proven fake because it advances HUNTER. Use denial once for GOT YOU!, then return to the safer capture routine. Keep a note of any resident who dies or disappears in the end-of-day report; EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH requires a truly clean building, not merely one S-ranked shift.
Keep the perfect ending separate from four controlled failures
The five Campaign endings are not five interpretations of one score screen. They require incompatible treatment of the building, so plan five Campaign completions. The clean run comes first; the other four can be executed as rule-based experiments with much less document work.
- EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
- Admit every real neighbor and keep every doppelganger out without losing a resident. Restart a day after a proven breach rather than hoping the casualty report stays clean.
- 6 FEET UNDERGROUND
- Admit everyone for all five days, including obvious doppelgangers. Do not press D.D.D. and do not deny a visitor because the run is testing total access, not poor-but-occasional judgment.
- WITH THE RIGHT TO A CALL
- Call D.D.D. on every applicant, real or fake. This is the fastest deliberate route for adding raw emergency calls, but only actual doppelganger captures advance HUNTER.
- CONSPIRATOR
- Dr. W. Afton must be the only real resident eliminated. Run the normal clean audit, admit the residents you prove real, keep doppelgangers out, and make Afton the sole real person sent to D.D.D. Denying every real applicant is not a guaranteed shortcut because a person left outside can still disappear. Check each daily casualty report; any second resident death invalidates the defining condition.
- JUST LIKE HENRY
- Finish with some resident deaths, but not the total-collapse or all-call condition. Let one confirmed doppelganger into a chosen apartment, then deny later applicants to that unit and inspect the rest of the building correctly. If no resident dies, the failure was too contained; if the building is wiped out, you crossed into the 6 FEET UNDERGROUND route.
Do not use the CONSPIRATOR strategy as proof that refusing every visitor is a universal perfect-ending shortcut. It is a deliberately narrow condition built around one named casualty. The clean route still requires correct admissions and correct rejections.
Answer the Steam-era Chester set, not the legacy quiz
Chester appears during Campaign and repeats the current question until it is answered. Complete all five for THE BEST IN THE CLASS and the medal. Read the first prompt before copying an answer: the Steam question asks for the year in which the ultimate answer was published. If your version asks for the meaning itself, you are looking at the old set where the answer was 42.
- Publication year of the ultimate answer:
1979 - Different permutations of the relevant Mersenne prime:
302400 - MVWKZIEXN + WFLTENX:
428653855 - Power-set size for happy palindromic numbers below 10,000:
536870912 - Chance of randomly guessing a nine-digit natural-number answer:
900000000
The numbers are not a password detached from the prompts. The second comes from the repeated digits in 2,147,483,647; the fourth is 2 raised to the 29 qualifying numbers; the fifth counts the integers from 100,000,000 through 999,999,999. Those checks make it easier to notice when a future update changes the wording or swaps a set.
Let Patch 2.0.4 schedule the Wanted Poster grind
BOUNTY HUNTING is the cleanup most likely to outlast the other 17 achievements. The Records screen contains 32 Wanted Poster slots. Patch 2.0.4 changed Campaign so that each day includes one doppelganger carrying a Wanted Poster and guarantees that it belongs to one of the neighbors on today’s list. That official rule is more useful than any fixed rarity claim.

Do not grind posters before the ending work. Every clean, bad-ending, Arcade, and capture run gives the collection opportunities to grow naturally. Once only posters remain, split the grind by how many base residents are still relevant:
- Many missing: start Campaign Day 1, inspect today’s short list, and play the day when it contains a resident whose unique variant you still need. Return to the menu and begin a new Campaign when the list has no useful target.
- A few missing: begin a Campaign and remove residents whose full poster sets are already complete. Preserve the base residents tied to missing slots. On later days, reroll the current day until today’s list includes one of those survivors.
- One base resident left: keep that resident alive while reducing the rest of the building. Re-enter the latest useful day without completing the final result screen, and verify the poster in Records after each new unique appearance.
The manipulation works because the patch chooses the day’s Wanted doppelganger from the listed-neighbor pool. Killing unrelated residents can shrink later pools, but it belongs in a disposable grind Campaign, never the clean ending file. Ordinary wrong documents, generic third eyes, or rearranged facial features do not necessarily correspond to one of the 32 portraits. Stop only when Records fills the missing slot; do not infer poster progress from how strange the visitor looked.
Take Overtime with clean decisions, not an emergency-button exploit
OVERTIME requires at least 1,000 points in Arcade. Build the score from correct checklists, correct admissions, and D.D.D. calls on actual doppelgangers. Once the six-pass audit is automatic, shorten it by grouping comparisons: put the two supplied papers together, keep the correct floor tab open, call while scanning the portrait, and complete the checklist only after the phone result.
Ignore old advice to spam the emergency button. One supplied Steam guide labels that method as possibly patched, and its own later discussion reports a large negative time result. It is not a stable route. If an accurate run falls short of 1,000, the next adjustment is faster paper handling and fewer unnecessary calls after a hard contradiction, not random arrests.
Arcade is also a good place to finish HUNTER and QUARANTINE. HUNTER counts 100 captured doppelgangers, not 100 button presses. QUARANTINE counts 40 completed matches across supported modes, so abandoning or dying early is not a substitute for reaching a result screen. Let the counters grow while pursuing OVERTIME before starting a dedicated repetition loop.
Treat Nightmare as sudden death
The inspection tools survive the move to Nightmare; the tolerance for mistakes does not. A doppelganger admitted in this mode kills you immediately. Current Steam completion evidence also warns that two incorrect D.D.D. calls end the attempt. The practical change is not a new checklist but a stricter proof threshold: documents, apartment, phone, and portrait must agree before admission.

For WAKE UP!, prioritize one conservative clear. Nightmare residents are supposed to look monstrous; the anomaly is a mismatch such as a missing horn tip, wrong stitch position, changed tattoo, altered teeth, or an inconsistent document. Read the folder supplied at the Nightmare desk rather than importing a memorized normal-neighbor table into this mode.
HAUNTED is a separate encounter inside Nightmare. Reset until the masked woman gives the warning, then continue the inspection loop until the Mask Ghost itself approaches. Do not confuse the warning visitor with the target. When the ghost wearing the warned mask appears, wait for the encounter to establish itself but call D.D.D. before it reaches the middle of the room. If the timing kills the run, repeat the encounter; random emergency calls during ordinary visitors only consume Nightmare’s tiny error margin.
Close the 18-achievement ledger

After the five Campaign endings, one Arcade score run, one Nightmare clear, and the poster cleanup, the remaining checks are mechanical:
- LANDLORD: open Custom Mode, create a neighbor, and add that tenant to the building.
- WORK ACCIDENT: if it did not register during CONSPIRATOR, it will register when a real resident is removed on WITH THE RIGHT TO A CALL. Capturing a doppelganger is not the named trigger.
- HUNTER: continue capturing confirmed doppelgangers until the 100-capture achievement registers.
- QUARANTINE: finish matches until the 40-match achievement registers; Campaign days and supported Arcade/Nightmare results contribute according to the current Steam completion records.
- Missing Campaign icon: compare the exact Steam name with the five ending conditions before starting another general run.
- Missing encounter icon: separate Clown, Chester, reveal, Mask Ghost, and Custom tenant triggers; none is fixed by improving a normal desk rank.
The official Steam metadata checked on August 4, 2026 identifies Nachosama Games as developer and publisher, March 11, 2025 as the Steam release date, and 18 achievements. The retained official news feed documents Patches 2.0.1 through 2.0.4, but that does not guarantee 2.0.4 will remain the visible build label forever.
