Do not turn the first playthrough into a 28-item checklist. Finish the island chain, keep a second save for Bean, and use post-game access for the experiments that can waste bait, money, boss attempts, or quest items. That separates irreversible progression pressure from repeatable cleanup.
Steam lists 28 achievements. This roadmap uses their exact public names and is current to the official Patch 1.0.9 announcement checked on August 26, 2026. The old locked-island Bean shortcut was removed in Patch 1.0.5. A current timed run must follow normal progression; the Easy setting introduced in 1.0.9 cuts enemy durability by one quarter and incoming damage by half.

Make two saves with different jobs
- Normal and cleanup save: complete every NPC chain, unlock all five islands and lure tiers, keep useful weapons and attachments, then return for cooking, trick shots, casino results, collections, Easy, and Handyman.
- Bean save: choose Easy, follow only required island progression, minimize purchases and travel, and abandon a run whose early split has already lost the available margin.
At a clean checkpoint, save through the supported menu commands instead of changing the file by hand. Patch 1.0.6 changed when those menu exits write progress and Patch 1.0.9 attempted another corruption fix, but neither announcement turns manual save editing into a supported achievement method. Community guides that alter island or playtime fields are excluded from this roadmap.
The first run should unlock the 12 progression achievements
| Achievement | Exact Steam requirement | Reliable checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Kill your first creature | Kill, do not merely catch, an early crab or shrimp. |
| Drip | Kill a drip creature | Finish the first rainbow-name variant and verify its Tab entry. |
| Who stole my beer | Find and kill the culprit, and bring it to the lighthouse keeper | Beer → Empty Beer Can → Spider Crab → Shell hand-in. |
| Getting an upgrade | Upgrade the engine on the boat | Buy an engine upgrade and confirm the boat’s state changes. |
| Dinnertime | Catch dinner for the lady in the forest | Three Leeches → Giant Piranha → distinct trophy returned to the woman. |
| Grillmaster | Start the grill | Complete the Desert grill NPC’s Blue Shark request, then activate the grill. |
| Vacation | Help the tourist swim on his vacation | Give a valid endangered creature, use the Carrot, then return the Pufferfish trophy. |
| I am speed | Buy the best engine for the boat | Buy the top engine after the relevant shop is available; trust the live comparison rather than an old price. |
| Fully equipped | Apply all attachments to a single weapon | Fill all four attachment slots on the weapon you will keep for late bosses. |
| Terrorizing bird | Defend the scared islanders from the terrorizing bird | Professional Boss Lure → Tuna placed as bait → Albatross trophy hand-in. |
| Deadliest catch | Help the military defeat the big creature they located | Finish the Scientist, Bowhead Whale, Volcano, and final Whale chain. |
| We are so back | Finish the game | Return the final trophy, use the military boat or RHIB, and complete the escape/credits. |
A boss death without the matching NPC hand-in can leave a story achievement locked. If one row is missing, inspect the quest trophy before repeating the combat. The progression walkthrough has the complete trigger and hand-in order.
Use weak targets for the style achievements
Noob
Noob requires a kill with no Killscore multiplier. Put an ordinary low-level creature on the ground and finish it with plain ranged fire. Avoid airborne catches, headshots, last-bullet setups, spins, long range, or other stylish conditions. Read the on-screen Killscore result; a fast kill is not automatically a zero-multiplier kill.
360 no scope
Use a weak creature that dies in one shot. Start with the target centered, perform a full rotation, reacquire it, leave the scope/ADS input untouched, and shoot from the unaimed stance. The rotation can be made across more than one mouse movement, but the finishing shot must remain a no-scope. Missing is cheaper against an ordinary catch than a Boss Lure target.
Impressive
Impressive asks for a 5x Killscore multiplier. Build several visible modifiers into one repeatable shot rather than hoping chaos produces them. A current community setup uses a strong rifle or assault rifle with a laser, then hip-fires at a flying seagull from range and aims for a lethal headshot. Airborne target, no-scope, range, one-shot damage, headshot, and overkill can stack; the live modifier list is the proof. If the result stays below 5x, change one missing condition instead of buying every attachment.
Post-game turns four dangerous stunts into cheap retries
Let me go
Die in an open place and do not press respawn. Wait for a seagull to pick up the body. Dynamite creates a controlled death when natural combat is inconsistent, but stand away from irreplaceable objects and quest trophies.
I’m the bird now
Put the boat in water, place or throw dynamite beneath it, move clear, and detonate. The achievement checks the physics launch. If the boat is grounded, the explosion may move it without producing a meaningful flight, so reset the vessel before spending another charge.
Everyone’s dream
Place dynamite on open ground and put an ordinary fish beside it as seagull bait. Back away, wait for a bird to descend, then shoot the dynamite to trigger the explosion at the right moment. This converts a fuse guess into a visible remote trigger. Do not use a quest trophy as bait.
Easy
This achievement requires killing a boss within ten seconds. After the ending, return to the Lighthouse with an upgraded ranged weapon, repeat the Empty Beer Can setup, and unload into the Spider Crab’s first opening. If it survives beyond the timer, stop consuming bait and improve damage, magazine capacity, or opening accuracy before the next attempt.
One burnt mini-boss can cover both eating conditions
Yummy in my tummy requires eating a burnt creature. Competitive eating requires eating a mini-boss. Use a replaceable target from the Beginner Boss Lure rather than a story trophy. At the normal grill, hold the mini-boss over the heat and inspect it with the in-game item view. A cooked multiplier is not yet burnt; wait until the item is visibly black and the live value or cooking state has collapsed, then eat it.
The Volcano’s lava is useful for safe cooked value in current walkthrough evidence, but it may stop at the profitable cooked state rather than the fully burnt state required here. Use the normal grill when the achievement is the goal, and verify both unlocks after eating before repeating the lure.
Separate Reel of Fortune RNG from roulette value
GOLD GOLD GOLD
Kill and record a Drip creature, then put it into a Reel of Fortune machine. The achievement unlocks when the machine awards a legendary skin, not when the spin begins. Drip variants can be hunted again, but no official legendary rate is published. Build a supply from lure pools you have already completed and treat every failed spin as RNG, not as evidence that a specific island is wrong.
All in
Roulette accepts an item as the bet. Choose green and win. Use replaceable late-game catches rather than a boss trophy or unique quest trigger. The wheel shows the current payout and result; read that UI rather than relying on a fixed multiplier copied from a guide.
Rich! Millionaire
Steam’s requirement is to sell something worth 100,000 or more. Inspect an item’s live Value before selling. A practical combined route is to cook a valuable late-game creature, use it for repeated green attempts, and sell the high-value returned item only when the inspection panel shows at least 100,000. If green wins but the result remains below the threshold, the base item was too weak; raise the inspected starting value rather than assuming another spin will change the same arithmetic.
Collector and Fishipedia need different checkmarks
Collector requires every creature; Fishipedia requires every Drip creature. Open Tab and keep normal and Drip gaps separate. Finish all story bosses and optional Boss Lure targets, then group the remaining names by Free/Hot Dog/Beginner/Standard/Professional/Scientific pool.
A Drip uses the normal creature route in the current cross-checked sources. Reel slowly enough to read the name, cancel ordinary candidates when the client allows it, and land the rainbow-name variant. Kill it and verify Tab before gambling the body. The lure and collection guide maps the disputed early pools, the three clean late pools, and every special boss trigger without inventing a guaranteed Drip rate.
Handyman changes the last hit, not the whole battle
Handyman says to defeat the final boss with bare hands. Official Patch 1.0.4 fixed the unlock for everyone in co-op, and current completion reports support using ranged damage for most of the fight before delivering the killing punch.
- Prepare the Volcano arena and choose Easy if the achievement, not difficulty, is the objective.
- Fight the Mutated Bowhead Whale with the ranged loadout you already understand.
- Stop at a small but visible amount of health. Do not chase an exact numerical threshold that the UI does not publish.
- In co-op, call a complete cease-fire. Unequip the weapon and let the assigned player punch.
- If a bullet lands the final hit, finish the story state, then repeat the boss on a valid retry path rather than claiming the condition should have counted.
Stay inside the Volcano boundary. Pulling the Whale too far away can reset the encounter, which is a route failure, not an achievement failure. Detailed landing, lava, and follow-up timing is in the boss strategy guide.
Bean after Patch 1.0.5: run the real island chain
Bean requires finishing the game within one hour. Patch 1.0.5 closed the route that let a player sail to destinations before earning their unlock, invalidating early instructions that jumped directly to the final area. Patch 1.0.9’s Easy mode is therefore the most important current change: lower enemy durability and incoming damage reduce both boss time and recovery risk without bypassing progression.
Use a dedicated solo save unless a co-op team has rehearsed roles. Solo keeps purchases, keys, trophies, and departure timing under one player’s control. The route is a sequence of exclusions:
- Lighthouse: earn only enough for the early weapon, Crab Fishing Rod requirements, and Beer. Kill Spider Crab and return the Shell immediately.
- Forest: buy the normal rod and one affordable ranged path, collect three Leeches without detours, kill Giant Piranha, and return its trophy. Inventory space is worth buying only when it prevents food or trophy loss.
- Desert: skip the optional Grillmaster and Blue Shark chain. Use a Standard Lure for a valid endangered creature, exchange it for the Carrot, and defeat Pufferfish with the terrain route.
- Rocks: invest further in the same ranged weapon, use the Professional Boss Lure for Tuna, place it, kill the Albatross, and leave as soon as the progression trophy is accepted.
- Volcano: satisfy the Scientist with five accepted fish, obtain the Fish Bucket, build only the damage and food needed for Bowhead and Mutated Bowhead, then complete the final hand-in and boat escape.
Skip collection casts, Reel of Fortune, roulette, trick shots, top engine shopping, cosmetics, the grill side quest, and optional Boss Lures. Use the Radar to find only the newly unlocked destination. Save through the game’s supported controls at transitions, but do not turn every island into a long menu stop.
Restart a run when an early mistake destroys the remaining margin: lost trophy, grounded boat, repeated boss deaths, or an optional purchase that forces another farming loop. A current honest route cannot promise a universal minute split because shop balance, physics, and boss attempts vary. The clock at the completed mainland escape is the only Bean proof.
Final 28-item audit
Count the list by groups before declaring the save complete:
- Progression (12): Getting started, Drip, Who stole my beer, Getting an upgrade, Dinnertime, Grillmaster, Vacation, I am speed, Fully equipped, Terrorizing bird, Deadliest catch, We are so back.
- Style and stunts (7): Noob, Impressive, 360 no scope, Let me go, I’m the bird now, Everyone’s dream, Easy.
- Cooking and casino (5): Yummy in my tummy, Competitive eating, GOLD GOLD GOLD, All in, Rich! Millionaire.
- Collections and challenge (4): Collector, Fishipedia, Handyman, Bean.
Twelve plus seven plus five plus four equals the 28 shown by Steam. If the total is lower, compare exact names rather than repeating a random activity: quest achievements need their hand-in, Killscore achievements need the finishing-shot modifiers, cooking needs the final food state, casino achievements need the correct machine and readback, and collections need Tab.
Sources and version warning
The public Steam achievements page for How to Fish supplies the exact 28 names and requirements; the official app listing confirms Dazed Games, the August 20, 2026 release, collection variants, style-shot rewards, casino play, and the official grill image. Dazed Games’ announcements establish the 1.0.4 Handyman fix, the 1.0.5 locked-island fix, the 1.0.6 save behavior, and the 1.0.9 difficulty settings. Cleanup setups were reconciled across current Steam Community guides and verified walkthrough references. Save-field cheats, the patched Volcano shortcut, fixed RNG promises, and unverified permanent prices were not used.
